FRIDAY. MAY 3lth, 1907. WEST HURON TEACHERS CONVENTION, The annual convention of the West Huron Teachers' Association was held in Exeter school on Wed- nesday and Thursday, May 22 and 23. An unusually large attenditnee of teachers and educators to listen to and discuss the many important educational questions of the gay goes to show that the teachers are becoming more and more interest- ed in the worthy cause of ed ucation and are watching the government closely, in the many changes that are being m.acle in the mechanisral of the educational administration of, our province. After the opening exercises the' adoption of the minutes of previous meetings, and the appointment of a "resolution committee," adoress- es of welcome were given by Trus- tees Martin and Huston. The question of "How may insti- tute meetings be made more 'at- tractive and profitable?" waig discussed by G. S. Howard, B1aket and by Miss B. Anderson, St Helens The chief things advised by these teachers in the discussion of this subject were, first, that the trustees should be present at and take part in the deliberations, and thus stand shoulder to shoulder with the teachers as sympathizers with and co-workers in the cause of education ; second, that minor 'township conventions" of trustees and teachers should be held annual- ly, in addition to the county san- ventioxas, but at a different time of the year, The question of "Proper School Equipment" was discussed by W. Ii. Johnston, klippen, who showed the necessity for the equipment, particularly in the grades of young- est pupils, tln.t the teaching xray be as objective tts possible, because such pupils are not able to grasp knowledge as yet when presented in the abstract. Messrs, McKay, of Hensall, and Long, of Dungannon, disdussed the question of Having the former p11blic 800.0160 lueili:;iantiti >r1s r•estored the de:pert.inent,' Thais a g`t ,s •l ngly tea fetter 'Of having this-etamitutt+ion restored on the grounds that it would bathe means elf inducing nlatny pupils" in rural districts to return to school after passing the H. S. entrance, who otherwise would never go Anther in education, and a H. b. entrance standing did not mean a. sufficient euucation for such boys and girls in life's various industries and pur- suits. They argued that if the de- nartu.ent would not restore this examination that there should be such examination introduced. by the county; and that these exami- nations could be held at centres for entrance examinations simul- taneously with them. Papers on "Busy Work for Part I. and Second Class Pupils" were ead by Miss Cunningham, of 13e1 - rave, and Miss J. Mustard, of ;ruoelield. The recent ob anges in the school ttw and regulations were discussed at length by J. Elgin Torn, I. P. S., taoderich ; J. A. Delgatty, Hayfield, and G. W. Shore, Varna, who dwelt particularly on the matter off,. the withdrawing of the "Compel.' sory ti,tlttry," as in force last year,` and the substitution of a grant -of 40 per cent, of all the salaries over slid above the mark of $300 in rural chool sections. The apportionment of government grant also on the >asis of school equipment, teachers qualifications, township assessment tccommodatiou provided. and. lib aries was carefully considered, The majority of teachers present eemed to be of the opinion that he new system of distribution of Yrent would be an improvement on he'•compulsory salary" enactment A most excellent paper on "What, Teacher (Jaan do to Improve His tattle" was read by bliss S. Gre ory, Exeter. She cautioned teach rs to guard against mental stag. ation, and to strengthen their nchorage in the confidence of the upils and parents of the conirnuni- y by ever seeking to increase and efresh their knowledge; by taking n aotiue interest in the welfare of ociety; by Identifying themselves ith all good and noble causes by ultivating such graces as cheer. tllnes0, sympathy, love and honor, it: by paying proper attention .to Noir own health, which is so es- ential ai1 asset to a teacheI•.
