Mr John Laporte of the Salable Line, Ieft on Wednesday, for the West to visit his sister, and to have a look at the "promised land." The 24th passed off very quietly in the village. Many went to Exe- ter to see the sports, others went fishing and the majority stayed quietly at home, The first open air band concert of the season (weather permitting) will be given by the Silver Jubilee Band, on Saturday evening, June let, at 8.30 o'clock. Let there be- et good attendance. FIRE AT HENSALL. On Wednesday night fire de- stroyed the Queen's Hotel, Hensall. The hot& was vacant, the late tenant having moved nut soon after May lst, when local option went into force. James Cnxworth is the owner of the property. The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss to Mr. (.loxworth will he heavy as insurance_ companies do not pay insuranee when buildings burn down if they are tenantless. WEEKLY SHOOT. The shoot of the Gun Club on Tnesdap evening was particularly interesting, as the grounds have heen so arranged that the birds are shot at from five a.ntles. This is in accordance with rules governing blue rock shooting.. f W. Hess and Jacob Deiohert Were Med for the medal, and in the shoot -off Hess won out. The land was in fine condition to re- neive the seed. and farmers all say that they never saw land work better. The spring grain is coming up nicely and is looking well, but s erne fields of flax have been frozen out 1.y the recent cold spells. With warm weather there would be a rapid growth and crops should be good. ]fall wheat is an exception, 'however, as it is badly winter kill- ecL Some fields look good and if favorable weather comes on should turn out fairly well.. Planting potatoes and root crops is noir in cinder and farmers aro buss* at it. Grass is veryshort yet, but cattle have been turned out as most of the barns are empty. Prospects are good for a heavy crop of all kinds of fruits, The show of buds is immense and ttn.tess caught b;' later, frosts the prospects are, that this will be a record year for pears, cherries, plums and apples Mr. Abe Bender of London spent the 24th. at Ms home hare. Kalbfleisch and family have moved. to Detroit, Mich where Mr. Kalbfleisch is engaged in the carpenter work. Dr. George Fee, wife and two children, of Reno. California. are visiting at the hoarse of theformer's brother, Wm. Fee, at present. Mrs. Otterbein, of near Blake, has moved into the dwelling lately occupied by A. A. rally held in the Evangelical church on Sunday evening was fairly well attended despite the inclemency of the" weather. The papers were ably given and very interesting. The Children's Day committee of the Evangelical cbnrch met on Monday evening and began the ar- ra,neements for celebrating that interesting annual event, Childrens Day. It will likely be held on. The .body . of the young Haan wa's found dead on the floor of a room with an, empty chloroform bottle by his side, and the lifeless form of his mother was found in bed. From inralications it would seen that the tragedy was the result, of a. suicide compact. Mr. and Mrs. Lehman left on Mon- day to attend the funeral of the unfortunate ones, 1907. 1. Per Year.
