HON TO ANTICIPATE BERGS
Dit. CQPLA.NS MADE TESTS
WITH ATLANTIC ICE.
Aceuul>i)liited :Data While Taking
Northern "Short Cut" in In-
terest of Selene.
Dr, Myer CopIsms, demonstrator
• of bacteriology and public health in
the University of Leeds, England,
has just returned from his voyage
in the North At+lantio, which was
undertaken for the purpose of
studying the currents and composi-
tion of the water to determine the
proximity of icebergs.
The tests which Dr. Coplane has
just completed were made on board
the Royal Mail line steamship Royal
Edward, which took the "short
cut" .across the Atlantic, along the
track which at certain seasons of
the year is regarded as dangerous
on account of the ice. On the -voy-
age thirty-four icebergs were sight-
ed. A continuous record was made
of the salinity of the ocean from
!Avonmouth to Ramouski, through
the Straits of Belle Isle and on to
Montreal. The record was subse-
quently continued from Montreal
up the St. Lawrence, through (sake
Ontario to Niagara.
St. Lawrence Traced to Limit.
Owing to the dense fog in the
Straits of Belle Isle during the re-
turn voyage the course was altered
for 'Cape Race and the south coast
of Newfoundland, thus affording an
opportunity for the effect of the St.
Lawrence to be traced to its ocean
limits. The apparatus was installed
in the hold twenty feet below the
surface, and as it was not fitted
with a recorder, it required contin-
ual watching.
All the data obtained have yet to
be analyzed and correlated, but
some very interesting phenomena
were revealed by the instrument.
The first thing that struck the ob-
servers was the very large distance
out to sea—much further than had
hitherto been supposed to be the
case --at which the influence of the
River Severn on the salinity of the
water -could be traced. Confirma-
tory 'evidence of this permeation of
river wafter through the ocean for
long distaxlous was afforded on the
other side 'of the St. Lawrence.
Discovered Berg Tracks.
D•r. Coplam has suspected that
icebergs followed definite tracks.
Indeed, this idea. is suggested by
the charts issued by the British
Government, showing, among other
things, the position of observed
icebergs. Some of these tracks
were discovered on the voyages out
and home, being indicated by a
great variation in salinity.
The investigation also found a
very strongly marked Arctic cur-
rent consisting of water of greatly
diminished salinity and of a very
low temperature. As between this
current and the normal ocean there
was a diminution of twenty-five
per cent. in salinity. On the east-
ward side of this current for about
five hundred or six hundred yards
the temperature of the water was
just about at freezing point. These
currents have seasonable changes
in direction, but otherwise are con-
stant.
These two experimental trips
across the Atlantic have opened u.p
a wide field for further investiga-
tion, and in view of the great in-
terest concerned in the navigation
of the Atlantic, it is fully expected
that the matter will be still further
pursued.
PRINCE OF WALES A FARMER.
Re Will Breed Shorthorns and
Horses at Cornwall.
The Prince of Wales is about to
make his debut as a farmer. He is
to start ahome farm in Cornwall
for the breeding of shorthorns and
heavy horses:
It is a tradition that a British
monarch should be a farmer, and
it is natural that the Prince should
start in the Duchy of Cornwall,
which provides him with some
$500,000 a year.
• Early • in the nineteenth century
Cornwall had some famous-elsort-
horn herds, but awing to inter-
breeding, due to the geographical'
Isolation of the county, ,the general
'stocks deteriorated, To remedy
thins the Prince's farm of 300 acres
• at Whiteford Will breed a new
stock for the . benefit of breeding
throughout the duchy, as the Prince
will specialize in stock of the best
pedigree and thus afford the whole
duchy the advantages of three and

Is Fatal Catarrh
in Your Family?
It Runs Hand in Rand With
Bronchitis, Weak Throat,
Pneumonia, Consumption.
Doctors state that 95' per cent. of
the Canadian people suffer from
Catarrh. Few escape. it. You can
easily recognize it from the bad
taste in the mouth and from lack
of appetite in the morning. In bad
cases the mucous drops from the
throat into the stomach and causes
nausea. The throat fills with
phlegm, the patient sneezes and
coughs continually, not infrequent-
ly there is lassitude and chilliness
and aching in the limbs.
Doctors recommend Catarrho-
zone, it is nature's own cure. It
drives out the germs, heals sore
spots, cleans away every vestige of
Catarrhal taint.
You send the soothing vapors of
the pine woods, the richest balsams
and healing essences, right to the
cause of your cold by inhaling Ca-
tarrhozone. Little drops of wonder-
.derful curative power are distri-
buted through the whole breathing
apparatus by the air you breathe.
Like a. miracle, that's how Catarrh -
ozone cures bronchitis, catarrh;
colds, and irritable throat. You
simply breathe its healing fumes,
and every trace of disease flees as
before fire,
So safe, infants can use it, so
sure to relieve, doctors prescribe
it, so beneficial in preventing win-
ter ills that no person can afford to
do without Catarrhozone, Used in
thousands of cases without failure.

months, and is guaranteed to cure;

DUKE OF MARLBOR0VGIi.
Despite the efforts made by influ-
ential persons to heal the breach
between the Duke of Marlborough
and his wife, no success has been
achieved in this direction, and the
Duke's sister, Lady Lilian Gren-
fell, acted as hostess, Their two
sons, who are rapidly growing out
of boyhood, spent their. Christmas
at Blenheim and then joined their
mother on the Continent.
The Duke is the head of the pow-
erful Marlborough family. to which
,fir. Winston Churchill is related.
The first Duke was the famous
soldier who gained the great vic-
tories of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oti-
British Officer Tells Row They are
Used in Balkans.
Lecturing in London, Major E.
H. Richardson, who lies just re-
turned from a visit to Montenegro,
strongly urged the use of dogs in
the army for scouting and sentry
work, for searching for the wound-
ed, and as messengers and ammuni-
tion carriers.
In peace times the dogs could be.
trained at a central establishment
and drafted to the various regi-
ments, where, as is done abroad,
they could be used with the sentries
in forts, aeroplane sheds, maga-
zines, etc., and incidentally reduce
the number of sentries required.
Major Richardson also gave his
audience the very latest details of
the employment of dogs by foreign
armies. The whole of the Bulgar-
ian frontier is guarded by dogs,
which are with the pickets and de-
tached posts.
The French Government has built
a training establishment at Fon-
tainebleu, and the dogs are largely
used for messengers.

SLUMBER SALOON NOW.
German Firm Is Building One with
Sixty Bunks.
An attempt to counteract the evil
effects of the "hustle" of modern
business life is about to be made by
an enterprising Berlin (Germany)
company, which will 'shortly open a
"Slumber Saloon" for Berlin
workers.
The German, despite the tremen-
dous amount of work he is able to
get through in the 'day is very fond
of his afternoon nap. Until quite
recently practically every business
firm in Berlin although the working
hours were from eight in the morn-
ing until eight in the evening, al-
lowed its employees two and a half
or three hours for lunch. Every-
body from the chief to the office boy
had time to journey comfortably to
his home in the suburbs, partake of
lunch in the bosom of his family and
enjoy a. sound "forty winks" before
waking up for coffee and cakes and
returning to his labors in .town.
But with the adoption of what is
generally known here as the "Eng-
lish lunch hour" the beloved siesta
became a thing impossible, and the
clerk and his chief after eating
lunch in a restaurant could only
spend their spare half hour in a
crowded cafe or on the streets.
The "Slumber Saloon," however,
is to give the Berliner his beloved
'ndiday nap again, in spite of his
shortened lunch time. In a quiet
little side street in the heart of the
itv the Palace of Morpheus is being
erected. The building will contain
sixty little cells or cubicle's, each
one furnished with a broad ottoman
and a freshly covered head cushion
for each visitor. The floors of the
building will be covered in thick
Boise-nrufilirg carpets and deep. and
unbroken silence will be the imper-
ative rule of the place.
