1 don't believe it is generally
known," said Dr, Banisret, "that
the injury done by alcohol depends
in large measure on the strains
put upon the body by the other
unfavorable • inflti 511058. 'For
example, drinkers often suffer
attacke deliairine•trenaws
dter an accident. I have in my
library a book on 'Industrial
Diseases and Accidents," which
not only states what I have just
told youbut says that in sortie
drinking men even a slight injury
may lead to a fatal attack of
delirium tremens. -
"
Well," said Foster, "we ought
to consider, I think, that when a
man loses aleg, or an arm, or a
hand, like poor Babcock, it isnt
only a loss to him, but to us all.
He cannot earn as much after that.
The law may give him some money
but we will all have to help pay the
bill, because the money given in.
creases the cost of the work, an..
so we poor buyers have to pay more
for what we buy."
That's true,"assented,Dr Banis.
ter. "Besides, it is not :only the
workman himself fellow.workman
Who may suffer the consequences
of an accident due drink ; it very
often happens that outsiders lose
life or limb as a result
"It is clear,' said Foster, as the
group separated, "that the
employer can't do everything, but
less drinking would help put down
the number of accidents and make
'work, and. life in general safer and
happier for everybody."

At the inquest held in Kingston, in
to the death of George Berryman. a
witness testified that the deceased
was exceedingly intemperate, and had
been drunk and quarrelling with his
wife shortly before his death. There
was some dispute as to whether a
wound in the head was the result of
his wife's defence against an attack
from him, or was an accident caused
in sopa other way. The jury returned
a verdict stating that the death was
because of blood -Poisoning arising
from the wound, but expressed the
conviction that the deceased was alone
responsible for his death. Part - of
the evidence was reported as fellows:
"With tears streaming down her eyes
Mrs. Berryman told of the heartless
Manner in which she and her children
had been driven from their home
time after time by a drunken
husband and father, During their
five :year's residence at Onshendall
she had been forced to flee 23 times
from her own hearth and seek
shelter in corn -fields sheds, vacant
houses. ,Once she hid a corn field
