The Herald, 1912-06-14, Page 2SOME QUEER HONEYMOONS STRANGE METHODS OF PASS- ING SWEETEST Ii10NTH. Among the Arctic Icebergs—From Pekin to Calcutta—Through Darkest Africa. The day of the honeymoon of bill- ing and cooing in a quiet country retreat seems to be on. the wane, and the era of the strenuous honey- moon to be ushered in. Within the last six months we have read of one couple who spent their "month of honey" in a thou- sand -miles' cycle ride in France; of another who scaled a round score of Alpine peaks in the interval be- tween the altar and the homecom- ing; and a third who had the "tame of their lives" among the grizzlies and other wild beasts in the Rocky Mountains. It is not long since Mr. Fleisch- man, an American millionaire, re- turned from an adventurous honey- moon among Arctic snow -wastes and icebergs. "Forty-seven days," he says, "we spent ramming steadily against the gathering ice in an effort to land on the north-east coast of Greenland." A $75,000 TRIP. In bridal rig of sheepskin, lined with leather, Mr. Fleischman and his bride despatched -thirty rein- deer, a hundred seals, and twenty- three polar bears; and when at last they returned to Cincinnati it was to declare that ther little trip .had been worth every penny of the $75,- 000 it had coast. Even more strenuous was the honeymoon of the Comte de Lesdain and his bride, who left the altar on a perilous journey from Pekin to Calcutta, climbing mountains 20,- 000 feet high, tramping through desolate regions where for two months they saw no living soul, es- caping drowning in swollen rivers as by a miracle, living on the game they could shoot, and wandering aimlessly for days on vast deserts and mud plateaus. IN DARKEST AFRICA. SKIN SIJFF: '.FRS Do you realize that to go through life tortured and disfigured by itching, burn- ing, scaly and crusted ec- zemas, or other skin and scalp humors is unneces- sary? For more than a gen- eration, warm baths with When. Major Cotton ledhis br ela?P t at'f+Ftllaalr in Bli' ..h moo,"nc'piSitrig aa:r iiacttrt o egwarhhe plunged into the very heart of "darkest Africa," making their way through hundreds of leagues of dense forest, hobnobbing with savage pigmies and cannibals, exploring the wilds - of Congo -land and Uganda, and after a year and more of such adventures as made Stanley famous, finding their way back to civilization, travel -worn, but vowing that they had had an "ideal honeymoon." For the strenuous honeymooner there is indeed no lack of scope. He may spend his month of honey as did a Swiss guide a short time ago on the chilly summit of Mont Blanc ; or, if his ambition soars still higher, he can follow in the wake of M. Flammarion. and many another newly -fledged bridegroom, and explore the region above the clouds. uficur Cap And gentle applications of Cuticura Ointment have proved successful in the most distressing cases, of infants, children and adults, when all else had failed. A Pill that Proves it Value. — Those of weak stomach will find strength in Parmelee's Vegetable Pills, because they serve to main- tain the healthful action of chs stomach and the liver, irregulari- ties in which are most distressing. Dyspeptics are well acquainted with them and value them at their pxo- per worth. They have afforded re- lief when other preparations have failed, and have effected cures in ailments of long standing where other medicines were found unavail- ing. Each has his oven cell with am -l' mock bed, washing utensils and a, table for books. The cells arc li;g.,lt-: ed by electricity and heated r by radiators. The authorities bare not forgotten the spiritual needsof their hostages. The consideration of the Ministry of Justice for the welfare of the prisoners is seen by an electric bol at the head of each hammoek, that the detained, if he be 'taken', suddenly ill, can communicate with his guard.—London Globe. Dr. J. D. Kellogg's Dysentery Cordial is prepared from drugs known to the profession as':ther oughly reliable for the cure; of cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea, griping pains and summer 'com- plaints. It has been used 'success- fully by medical practitioners for e4 number of years with gratifying' ref sults. Flammarion's balloon honeymoon lasted but from one day to the next ; but every moment was crowd- ed with delight, as the "white bird" bore him and his bride over the snowy ridges, glaciers, and preci- piees of the Alps, with the moon sailing in splendor above their heads. But among all such rash enter- prises you may search for for a rival to that of Captain Andrews and his American bride, who left their wedding -breakfast to fare ,across the Atlantic in a canvas -cov- ered "cockleshell," four yards long and two feet wide, with a small store of provisions for ballast. The honeymoon 'voyagers pro- posed to sail down the eastern coast of the United States, and then, by way of the Gulf Stream and the Azores, to Europe. Instances of the Stupidity of Nit - times of Africa. The natives of Central Africa aro described by the late Sir Henry M. Stanley in his "Autobiography" as being incredibly stupid. He. }tells, for example, of one native who, with another man, was sent;' in a canoe across a river to fetch a com- pt iy of men to camp. Afterlwait ing an hour, Stanley went tk, the river, where he found the two. pad- dling each in an opposite direi;ion, andeblaming the other for hi stu- pidity. They were in a passion of excitement, and quite unable to hear the advice of the men, across the river, who were bawling direc- tions to them how to manager their canoe. For 'Sprains and Bruises—There is nothing better for sprains and contusions than Dr. Thomas' Eclec- tric Oil. It will reduce the swelling that follows a sprain, will cool the inflamed flesh and draw the pain as if by magic. It will take the ache out of a bruise and prevent the flesh from discoloring. It seems as if there was magic in 3t, so speed- ily does the injury disappear under treatment.
