Killed At Durham
Jas. Agnew, a brother of Rev. J.
Agnew of London, and Mr. Thomas
Agnew of Winghain, was fatally in-
inreclein a stone crushing machine at
•Durham on ,Tuesday of last week.
• 'The',Durham Chronicle has the follow-
ing to say •of the accident.
"A serious accident occurred about
4.30 on Tuesday afteinoten at th'e John
E.,Russell plant, when James Agnew,
;an employee, had a miraculous es-
cape from death when caught in the
belt that drives the loading conveyoie
As Mr. Agnew was alone at the time,
the real facts of the case arenot
kreawri to us, but it is thought that
• while cleaning the ice off a pulley, and
• working around the hopper that is
• esed in loading cars, his foot must
hew slipped and his left •arm 'was
'ought between the belt and the pul-
ley. With his left, arm caught ik'the
belt it is thought he attempted to save
himself by throwing himself against
the timbers with -the result that see-
eral of his ribs on the right side were
fractured and his lungs penetrated_
Mr. Agnew was rendered unconscious,
and, had it not been for the belt stop-
ping and the workmen corning to in-
• vestigate the cause, his injuries might
•*aye been much •more serious. Mr.
.Agnew has been an employee of the
"Russel plant and a • resident of the
•-town for the past eighteen -months,
•he is about 52 years of age and has a
iamily of four in Durham, besides a
• ..eouple of married daughters.
• The injured man was rushed to the
-tospital and for a tinie some small
:hope was entertained for his ,recovery
het just as we go to press we learn
that he passed away at 9.45 this morn-
.
Mr, Agnew was a quiet, hard work-
-ing man, a favorite with his comrades
'zat work, and the sorrowing -widow and
ha:ve the deep_sympathy of the
'immunity in their irreparable loss."
