FARMERS',SUN WARNS
Electors Against All Hyphenated
Candidates
In Western Ontario strenuous eff-
orts have been made by the Liberals
to line up the Progressives .behind
Hon. MacKenzie King. There are
all kinds of hyphenated candidates.
It is a case- of anything to beat the
Tories , President Amos of the U.
F. 0. has already'disassociated himself
from the Progressives, and The Fal'171-
er's Sun, official organ of the U. F.
0., commends his remarks and joins in
the condemnation of those candidates
who are coming before the elector-
ate under an hyphenated nomencla-
ture. The Sun remarks;
"The Sun also joins with President
Amos. -in his condemnation of those,
candidites, who are coming before the
electorate under an hyphenated nom-
enclature. . ... ...The __farmer's
movement came into being, because of
the farmer's distrust of and dissatis-
faction with the old political Parties.
How. then, can those candidates who
are running- as Liberal -Progressives
or Progresisve-Liberals claim to be
entitled to the support of the U. F.
0., as an organization?"
The Sun editorially also draws
attention to the fact that one candi-
date in Norhumberland, claims to be
running as an IndePendent-Progress,-„,
ive-U.F.0..° The Sun says that he
is nothing but a plain Liberal, running
under all these colors to deceive the
public. Western Ontario has a num-
ber of candidates of the same type
and just as versatile . They add a
lot of hyphens to their name purely
arid simply to •deceive the electors.
The London Free Press commends
the editorial of the Sun, to the farm-
ers of Western Ontario. '''' It does
not be,lieve that they will be deceived
by the Liberal tactics or that they will
be ready to be used as a donkey en-
gine to put in power a party with the
sorry record of the King ministry.
Here is what The Sun says in regard
to the Liberal candidate in Northum-
berland.
"Apparently the most versatile of
the candidates so far put forward in
the present political campaign is May-
or W. A. Fraser, of Trenton, who is
nominee for Northumberland County
• and who, if the columns of the Co-
bourg World are to be believed, is
running as a Liberal-Progressive-U.F.
0. It is claimed for the gentleman in
question that he is one of the busie't
men in Central Ontario, and the Sun
can well believe it . It would take all
of any man's time to live up to a title
like that.
"Although we have no reason to
doubt that Mr, Fraser's \ personal
,eharacter is such that he is worthy
of the trust which the various groups
have reposed in him, what the Sun
cannot understand is, how ,even a
man of Mr. Fraser's versatility, can
ride four political horses all at the
same time. If he is Independent, how
can he be Liberal? And -if he is a
Liberal, how can he possibly be In-
dependent? He is not the only
candidate who is trying to be U. F.
a and Progressive both at the same
time, but so far as The Sun is aware,
he is the only candidate who takes all
four groups to his bosom.
Fraser is a Liberal and for this we
have no fattlt to find with him. But
the Liberals are out,to beat the Ti r-
ies. is the same old story which
has been repeated with variations, fri-
er and over again in the history of
Canada.
"What, however, grieves The Sun
at this time is that, although the farm-
ers went into politics in,order to take
the game of politics out of the hands
present campaigA,Ias in Northumber-
land County, the farmers under var-
of the party politicians, we find in the
ious group names merely appendages
rof the Liberal party. It appears very
much as though the U. F. 0. member-
ship in Northumberland County has
meekly permitted the wool to be pull-
ed over its eyes and to allow itself to
be tied on the tag -end of the Liberal
party like one of the paper tails a little,
boy ties on the tag -end of his kite,"

August 13th, going by Stoughton to
W'eyburn, a distance of about 8o miles
over a very good road and a fine
country, We stopped a few hours
and took a drive around the grounds
of the Mental Hospital, • It is one
of the finest institutions of the kind
I ever saw, and the crowds of inmates
it is pitiable to see . From there, we
started for Assiniboia, over too, miles,
and over the worst roads I ever drove
on, some good crops, and some very
poor. We saw a small track, which
had been struck by- hail, nothing left
to, cut . After driving 250 miles we
reached Thyme Wray's about dine p.
m. and the most tiresome day's drive
we have had.
At the present time, the Cutting is
mostly done, and threshing has begun
around Estevan and also here.
I saw as fine a crop of wheat as I
ever saw grow ,and they certainly do
business on a rushing scale, everyone
on the jump.
The day before we left Estevan,
Watt Allison had a new binder, cut-
ting ten foot of a swath and drawn

by a 15.3o tractor, the whole thing
being manipulated by one,;man.
I tell you the standing wheat soon
disappeared, but since coming to near
Woodrow, the binders have been very
busy. I drove a binder for Thyme
Wray for a few days and cut some as
heavy wheat as I ever saw grown. In
fifteen hours cutting with one outfit,
I used over 85 pounds of twine. He
has over 30o acres of wheat, of course
not all` that heavY, but all a good
crop. He expects to thresh around
8,000 bushels of wheat, which looks
like some bunch to an Ontario fellow.
It is far from being all profit, for
help is none too plentiful ,and they
are paying from four to five dollars
a day to stookers. Some get 45c. per
acre, and then the threshing is 12 c.
per bushel for wheat, and 8 cents for
;oats, so when they take all the ex-
penses out, there is none too much
left for the farmer. Still I think there
will eb a lot of them able to go to
Florida for the winter. One or two
cows is about all they keep, and the
horses are turned out to forage. How-
ever the men have to go some from
the time the grain is ripe until it is
in the elevator. They are certainly
fine fellows to work for, and get from
4.30 a.m. until 8 p.m. to do a day's
work in and they feed you the very
best.
To -day we drove about sixty, milci's
through the country, and it is great
to look across the country ,and see
the fields covered with stooks of grain
and threshing machines in full swing.
There is a steady string of teams,
mostly four horse, teams, passing by
where we are siayiny, hauling wheat
to Woodrow elevators, There are six
elevtors there, all doing business
They are paying $1.16 per bushel for
No. i wheat, but the heat struck it too
soon, and -consequently a lot won't
grade. No ,x . After this week we ex-
pect to leave for Mposejaw and Re-
