- Sandy Book, N. j.—The waters off Sandy Hook vibrated the #o
successive explosions of depth bombs,• each containing•100 pounds of
TNT, .which were set off by Battery D, of the Seventh Coast Artillery,
in practice tests, near Fort Hancock: The mines were taken out to
sea by the U. S. Array Mine Layer "General Ord," and lowered into
the sea after having wires extending from shore 'connected to therm.
At a given signal a target was towed across the mine field,,anid when
it wasover amine; men on shore set the mine off, thus blowing• the
target to bits end testing the mines' efficiency. Left: .Loading mines

National Indian Congress, was the unveiling of the battle monument
cerninemorating the Battle of Spokane Plains, which was the last to.

of the warriors who fought there, pledged everlasting peace in the sign
