Do YOUR SHOES FIT?
By Dr. W . J. Scholes
The condition of the feet may bear
an important relatioziiship to one's
health and efficiency. In an article in
the Illinois Medical'Journal, Dr. S. C.
Woldenberg says that the root -sore
man, woman, or child either cannot,
or is disinclined, to walk or exercise.
And we know that a certain amount of
exercise Is necessary for the promo-
tion and preservation of health:
Most foot troubles have one com-
mon cause. Bunions, corns, callous-
es, over-riding toes, hammier -toes and
in -growing toe -nails are produced by
ill-fitting shoes. Very often these de-
formities are produced rather early in
life—during childhood. The result is
that among civilized people it is dif-
fciult; to find many adults who have
normal feet.
Dr. Wollenberg gives an idea of
what a properly built shoe should be.
Shoes for an adult should be at least
one-half inch longer than the distance
from the tip of the great toe to the
heel. The inner border should be
straight from, the tip to'the ball of
the great toe. It is very important
that the length of the shoe from the
ball. of the great toe to the heel should
correspond to this length' hi the foot.
Rounded Toes Best
It may also be added that the t
of the shoe should be rounded, n
pointed. Toes should never be crow
ed: together. And the heels shou
not be so high as to' alter the norm
balance of .the feet and legs, thereby
causing faulty posture.
As feet are often deformed durin
childhood, it is very important th
great care be exercised in the sele
tion and fitting of shoes for childre
There is no good reason why a n -
shoe should be uncomfortable. I
will not be if it is built to conform t
he shape of the foot and is properl
itted. The painful process known a
'breaking in" a new shoe usuall
means, according to Dr. Woldenberg
hat the foot is being broken down.
And the importance of well-fittin
tockings should not be overlooked
These should not be too short. I
hey are too large, they may for
wrinkles which produce irritation
For ill-fitting stockings, as well as ill
itting-shoes, may cause foot troubles
By wearing only properly built an
roperly fitted shoes you can avoi
ost foot troubles. You can cur
any of the milder degrees of foot de
formities in the same way. Many'a
oldier got rid of his corns while. in
he army.

Questions. and Answers
Prevention Of.Cancer
H. L. H. asks: "Is there anything
hat can be done to prevent develop-
ment of cancer? The reason I ask
that there has been cancer in our
mily, and if there is any known way
keep from getting it I would like
know it."
Reply.
About all that can be advised is to
oid all sources of chronic irritation
tissues.. Cancer seems more liable
develop where there:has been such
.citation. Irritation of the mouth and
ngue by rough, sharp -edged teeth,
of the lips'by a short rough pipe -
on may also be the result of disease.
The presence of gall -stones is an 'ex-
rttple of this. Having chronic dis-
se conditions remedied as far as
ssible would probably help to Are-
nt cancer.
Suspicious' sores, or lumps or mass -
or areas that have a tendency to
eed' readily, should be examined by
physician. For in the early stages,
neer can ,often! .be completely re-
oved. Regular periodic` medical ex,
{nations would probably lead to a
duction in the death rate from .can-

know what would cause pain in the
knuckles. The pain is not there all
of the, time, but just comes and goes,
especially if 1 put 'any hands in cold
water or get . them cold out -doors.
Could it be something starting in
these joints?"
Reply
The pain is probably caused by
chronic infectionof the joints of the
fingers. There is a possibility of arth-
(rtis deformans developing unless the
process is arrested. It would be ad-
visable for you to be examined with
a view to finding the source of the
infection. It may be in the gtinis,
roots of the teeth, the -tonsils, nose,
or nasal sinuses, or elsewhere in the
body.
