OT.DEST TUREBEY PIONEER
PASSES TO HTS REWARD
(Continued Pram page one)
than the whole pack were on their
heels, Mr, Martin used up his supply
of shot in trying to drive them away.
When the wolves were near' Martin's
cattle would squeeze their bodies up
close against the side of the hut.
About a. year later Mr. Jenkins was
notified to' go to Goderich to act on
the jury. He parcelled up his good
coat and shirt and set out on foot, as
was customary and almost necessary
in those days he carried his trusty
axe, when he carne to the river which
he had to follow in order to reach
Goderich he decided to make a raft.
Completing a light raft of cedar and
fixing a seat on' it, he built a fire and
spent the night, daybreak found hire
'gliding smoothly over the waters of
the Maitland towards •Goderich:
About Manchester he encountered his
first difficulty in the shape of rapids
caused by a beaver dam .across the
river. One end appeared to be open
and the sturdy pioneer steered' 'his
raft for the opening, when too late
he found a tree had fallen' across the
river just below the dam and into the
branches of this, his raft plunged
headlong and its passenger thrown in-
to deep water along with his luggage.
After. some hard work Mr. Jenkins
succeeded in getting his bundle and
reaching the shore, being unable to
pull his raft out of the tree into
which it was wedged he set put on
foot to complete his journey . to the -
county town.
The hardships endured by our fore-
fathers in the days when this part of
Ontario was a wilderness; sound al-
most like interesting novel tales to
us who reap the pleasures of every
convenience and luxiury handed down
to us by'the. sturdy. pioneers.

Lights On Vehicles
Farmers who are still driving.hor-
ses on the highways, must, according
to Ferguson government, either get
home from town before darkness falls
or have their'lamps trimmed and
burning on their buggies or wagons,
The lamps on rigs will become popu-
lar once more for lanterns would be
very awkward. Bills to' compel driv-
ers of vehicles after night to have
lights on their rigs have'been intro-
duced in the legislature for several
years past' but always were defeated
in the . Municipal Committee. This
session the light bill has been intro-
duced by''a cabinet member, Hon. G.
