As I was making the last stretch

who spoke French. There was some-
thing familiar about the fellow's voice

his meaningless, "Monsieur! Morf-

plantation I reined down to a walk
and recovered some of my cof ipos-

drive I saw a young woman at one
side, standing by a hedge. She soft-

revealed her to be mademoiselle.
She was dressed inthe mode, and
inost wonderful to gaze upon; a sev-

my horse loose for a black boy to
catch and stable and . hurried across
the lawn and stood beside her.
"Mademoiselle, some time agog I do

She haddifficulty in adjusting some
twigs of the hedge to her liking, and
her voice' was so low I could scarcely

with a quick uplift . of her eyes; and I
could swear she was laughing at me.
"You brought me here to have ine

demanded.
"It is shameful to make me say

Even then I feared she was sacri-

absurd sense of gratitude.
"But your pride—"
"Enough of that word!" she fiercely'
cried, clutching . both my bands,, and
turning eyes filled with tears for my
inspection. Then humbly:
"Does monsieur find pride in me

My arms would have closed about
