THE STARS FINISH THE SEASON STRONG WINNING ADVANCE -TIMES TROPHY The final game of the town league soft ball was staged on Thursday eve- ning, last; in, the Town Park, between Fry-Gunns and the Stars. The, game resulted in a win for the latter by' a score of,14-11;thereby winning the beautiful Advance -Times trophy. Both .teams were keen to win, in some cases too keen, resulting in a number of errors, but these did not detract from the excitement-. ofthe game in the least. In the first past of the game the Stars piled up quite a lead and it was not until about the sixth inning that Fry-Gunns started to pound the ball, and kept gradually gaining on. the Stars, 'but the handicap was a little too largeto overcome before the game was called in the eighth inning on account of darkness. A very striking • thing about soft ball this year was the finish made by the Stars. They lost the first seven games of the regular schedule and by consistent winning in the remaining. games tied the Clerks for third place, and in the final game of the schedule defeated the Clerks and earned the right to meet the Foundry to decide who would meet the Fry-Gunns for the Championship. They 'met the Foundry in a series best two out of three, winning from them in two straight games. They then met the Fry;Gunns and eliminat- ed them in two straight games, The Spirit the Stars showed in never giv- ing up even when things looked hope- less makes you think they must have believed in the saying, "the first shall be last. and the last first The game was handled by A. M. Forbes behind the plate, W. J. Bund- scho at first; and second and F. Fuller at third base, to the 'satisfaction of about two hundred spectators. The line-ups were as follows: Stars:- J. McKibbon,c,; A. Coutts, p.; H. Groves, 1st base; S. Cowan,. 2 b.; W. Tiffin, s.s.; F. Templeman, 3 ,b.; A. Peebles, if.;. H. Walker, cf,; W McKibbon, rf. Fry-Gunns,-H. Wilds, c.•, W.' The report of the trea- surer showed that while they started the season with a clean sheet they now had a balance of $44.66 in the bank. A` hearty vote of thanks was tendered td' Mr. Allister Forbes, the official umpire for interest and sacri- fice of time in trying to keep the game snappy, and showed their apprec- iation in a tangible way. e The Executive at this meeting pre- sented the Advance -Times Trophy to the Stars, the champions .of the town for 1928. It is the intention of the Executive to hold a soft bpi Tournament, com- posed of four teams, picked from the various town league teams. The first game to be played on Thursday even- ing, August 23rd. Particular care has been taken to select School shoes that, not only look well but that will give good wear and while we have the cheap lines, we especially emphasize the needof good solid shoes for Fall as being not only the more comfortable but better for actual wear. Our selection of School shoes is•large and varied. Willis' Shoe Store. LADIES WIN OUT AT WALKERTON Two rinks of 'local lady bowlers, composed of Mrs, W. A. Miller, Mrs, J. A. Fox, Mrs. A.
