BRUCE'S PROV. PARD ' ,SCHEME
Proposition to Make Bruce Penin-
sula into a "Provincial Park is En-
dorsed by .Toronto Press, Which
Sees Great Possibilities.
The Toronto newspapers have tak-
en up seriously the proposal to make
the Bruce Peninsula a big provin-
cial park .for the conservation of
wild life , and fishing. A motion was
introduced at the Bruce County
Council at Walkerton, to make the
northern townships a park. Tlie mot-
ion was evidently a feeler and brought
on a spirited discussion, some of
which was of the burlesque type and.
some of the serious variety.
The Toronto Star editorially says;
A serio-comic discussion took
place at a recent meeting of the
`Bruce County Council on a motion
introduced by one of the members
recommending that the four north-
ern townships of the Bruce penin-
sula be offered to the Ontario Gov-
ernment to be used as a provincial
park. The proposal was taken ser-
iously by :some and used by others
as a text for humorous speeches.
Major J. C. Tolmie, reeve of South-
ampton, pointed to Dan McDonald,
reeve of Eastnor, as one who had
never married because he knew , that
his township was no place in which
to bring up children. ' The four
reeves of the northern townships
chose to regard ,the motion as a
joke. The proposal was finally
withdrawn to be re -introduced at
the June meeting.
The motion had more in it than
a joke. The four northern townships
of the Bruce peninsula are not inviting
for the purposes of agriculture. They
originally produced a fine stand of
timber and could be reforested. But
the peninsula between the Georgian.
Bay and Lake Huron is finely adapted
for hunting and fishing and could
readily become one of the finest sum-
mer resorts in the province. It is al-
ready attracting a growing number
of tourists every year. Not only has
it heedful scenery, but it offers
vistas of the ruggedly impressive.
When Reeve Colwell of Kinloss
brings in his motion again in June
he will probably make it clear that
his suggestion is a serious and prac-
tical one.
There would be no question of ev-
icting the inhabitants—the idea would
be to conserve, reforest and develop
the surpassing tourist attractions of
the region.
