S. of the 'United Church met at Mrs, Kaine's home ,Sept, lst, The President, Mrs. R. Ashton presided, The meeting opened with "Hail to the Lord's Annointed,"- This was followed with prayer by the Presi dent, Alternate Scripture reading was led by Mrs. W, Sicnson, The Lord's Prayer .was repeated in uni- son, Hymn "Jesus shall regn where 'er the Sun"was sung, The minutes were read and adopted. Two empty crates of jars have been received for filling for the 'Deaconess Home, in Toronto. Plans were arranged for the Sectional meeting to be held here in October. Mrs. T O. Johnston gave a talk on "Por"sibilktes of Prayer." We all know them, "Are we .using them?" Roll call ;was answered with a word grain or harvest, Mrs: :Gallaher in- vited the October meeting to her home. As Medical Work in Canada, was the subject, Mrs. Hamilton told about the work of Burns Lake Hos- pital, B.C. Mrs. Edgar told of the work at Ethelburt, Manitoba. Mrs. Kaine and Mrs. Abram sang :the • verses of "Count Your Blessings. All joined in the chorus. Mrs. Whit- field then told how one lady gave so much to Missions when she• began to count her blessings. The meeting closed with singing "Take My Life and Let it Be' and prayer by Mrs. Johnston. all in the line-up which marched to the grounds where they proceeded around the new quarter -mile track, and the judges picked the winners, which were as follows: Best .decorated car, R G. Newton; I3usiness Men's Float, Harvey Spar - ling; Comic Jazz. Band, Gorrie Boys; decorated horse in saddle,- Victor Shera; comic outfit in vehicle or sad- dle, W. King and M. Abram; Best Clown, F. Taylor; Best decorated bi- cycle, 1 Bill Newton, 2 Robt.' Wade; Fancy dressed lady, Velma Lennox Comic dressed boy under 12 years, Glenn Wheeler; Comic dressed girl under 12. years, .Helen Jefferson, Margaret Batt, Catherine Butt; Old- est looking couple, Mr, and Mrs. G. Baker; Best Comic Couple, IVIrs.' S. Wheeler and Miss Edith Stanley, of Brussels; Fancy Dressed Gent,Jim Edwards. The judges were. Chester L. Mc- Laughlin, of Winnipeg and originally of Gorrie; Professor McKinnon, O. A.C., Guelph, and Mrs.Sage, . New York City. Immediately following the parade, Harriston and Clifford were the first on the ball :diamond, when Harriston won, playing the second game with Drew, Harriston winning again. The Gorrie girls played the Ethel girls in a snappy game of softball, the hone team winning 18-6,' . The track events proved exciting too, when a bicycle race was run, the winners being 1st, Elmer Butt, 2nd, Dick Jones, 3rd George Kiel. So many" entries were made in the potato race that it was necessary to run three heats, the winners of each heat running again. The winners were: 1st, ,Clarence Sparking, 2nd Bill Mann, 3rd Walter Woods. As an after -thought a straight race was run and almost a dozen horses were entered, the winners being, lst, Manford Irwin, 2nd Kenneth Hastie, 3rd Bill Mann. During the afternoorr on the plat- form, a little Scotch lassie (Miss VanWyck, of Wingham) gave some' clever steps to the bagpipes played by Mr. MacDonald, also of Wing - ham. The concert, a select play "Just a Stepchild" a 3 -act Comic -Drama, presented by' Goderich talent, was a treat. When Rev. Mr. Craik intro- duced the play and spoke of it being presented nine times, and rafter one saw it, it is no wonder, for each player is specially suited for his or her part, and all were splendid. Be- sides the play, Mr. Norman Blatch- ford, of Wingham, gave some de- lightful numbers on the mouthorgan and banjo; Mr. Henry of Goderich, a cornet solo, and little Miss Hope SPORTS DAY — GREAT SUCCESS Large Crowds Attend Gorrie Celebration on Monday Hundred of people were on hand to make the Sports on Labor Day the huge success it proved to be. The weather man did his part, and gave ideal weather. The village was decorated with large arches of ever- green, spanning the streets in many places, as well as the places of busi- ness. The parade, the first item of much interest, was splendid, and was head- ed in a most fitting manner by the saddle horses, after which came the Blyth Boys' Band and the ball teams Gorrie girls' softball team, and the baseball teams from Harriston, Clif- ford ancl_Drew.' The humorous part followed the decorated cars, when cows, clowns and comic outfits were. very much in evidence, also decorat- ed bicycles, a wee bride and groom, wee nurse, as well as gypsies, were AiJvatic : -Times Misspelle f�,Y{ ord t TRY THIS ONE! There were all greatly enjoyed. The hall was filled to over -flow- ing, while dancing was also- enjoyed at an open-air pavillion with Moff- at's Orchestra in attendance, A Scotchman's dance was also held in the hall following the concert with Belgrave Orchestra supplying the music. Ashton. The Misses Dorothy and Margar- et McKinney, of Guelph, si5ent the past week at the borne of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Newton. Mr. and Mrs, McKinney also spent the week -end here. Mrs. E. The Women's Institute will hold their regular meeting on Sept. 14th at the home of Mrs, Frank Cole, when Mrs. Wright, of Wroxeter will gave a demonstration of rug weav- ing from silk hose etc. Mrs. (Dr.) Armstrong will also give a talk on "The Storing of Vegetables for Winter." Miss Alma Hastie who resumed her duties as teacher at Kitchener last week, spent the holiday with her father, Jas. Hastie. Mr. Knowlson Hueston and bride returned home from their honey- ntoon last week, We welcome Mrs. Hueston to the village, and wish thein a long voyage on the sea of matrimony. Mr. and Mrs, Arthur Miles and slaughters, Margaret and Audrey and son, Ronald, spent the holiday, with Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wade.
