Traps Wrong Animal
A skunk at school would not be.
so unpopular as at the proverbial gar-
den party from the viewpoint of the
pupils and at the Clinton. Public
School some of the pupils had visions
of a holiday. However, the trouble
was easily traced to a budding trap-
per, who had set a snare for a rabbit
and caught the wrong animal. The
boy was sent home to change his
clothes and the other pupils went on
with their three R's.
Introduce Tax Prepayment
Certificates at Kincardine
A plan of tax prepayment by certi-
ficates of $10 and $50 denominations,
with a saving of 5 per cent. to the
purchaser was approved by the town:,
council at its December meeting. Ef-
fective January 1, certificates may be
purchased from then until May 15.
Following the plan adopted in God-
erich, Toronto and other centres, a
$10 certificate in January costs $9.76,
$50 certificate, $48.80. Mayor J. G.
Ellenton introduced the , measure,
pointing out that there was no saving
to the town. Interest now paid banks
will go to the taxpayers.

United Church in. U.S. Plan Union
Washington Methodist officials
announced the preliminary ratification
of a 4,000 -word "plan of union" which
they hope will bring together by 1940
the three main branches of the
Church in the United States. Culmin=
sting seventy years of negotiation, the
plan calls for consolidation of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, Metho-
dist Episcopal Church South, and the
Methodist Protestant Church, under
the new ` name of "The . Methodist
Church."
Japan Suggests Limited Navies
London -Japan's demand for a
"common upper limit" for the great
powers was the salient point of dis-
cussion in the international naval con-
ference. Willingness of Japan to in-
clude • all five of the great powers in
the common upper limit marked a
change in the Japanese stand.
Hauntreann to Die in January
TreNton, N.J,—The execution of
Hauptmann was set for the week of
Jana 13:. The original date was set
aside by Hauptmann's application to
the Court of Errors and Appeals for
a new trial, This court denied the
appeal . on Oct. 9, and the Supreme
Court of the United States rejected
a request for the review of the trial..

London — While indications of
widespread dissatisfaction with the
Anglo-French proposals for settling,
the Italo-Ethiopian conflict grew,

back from Switzerland.
Head of Nazi Gendarmerie Arrested
Berlin—A sensation was created in
Berlin when it was learned that Col-
onel T. R. Fritsch, Coininander-in
Chief of the Nazi National Gendar-
merie, had been arrested. Officials
were silent regarding the arrest, but
unconfirmed reports said it resulted
from charge of moral corruption and
alleged disobedience to orders of the
military high command,
Japan Gets More Chinese Territory
Control over another large portion
of North China was handed over to
Japan when the newly appointed
Northern •Political Council accepted
the Japanese demand to place a spec-
ial Mongol police force in control of
Eastern Chahar.
Would Not Broaden U.S.
Neutrality Policy
Washington—Frank Kellogg, form-
er Secretary of State, co-author of the
Kellogg-Briand pact, and winner' of
the Nobel Peace Prize, criticized pro-
posals to broaden the ,United States
neutrality policy to include embargoes
on. war ,materials, such as oil, iron and
steel. "The United States can main-
tain peace so far as its influence is
coueertted without any additional leg
islation," he said,

Two to Die kr One Murder
Pembroke -Mary Cowan, Widow of
Albert Cowan, who was shot to death
at Barry's Bay on. July 21st la'st, was
found guilty of the murder. Sentence
of death on the woman whom physic-
ians had declared in evidence to be
a "moron" with the mental capacity
of 'a child` of nine, was pronounced by
Mr. Justice Kerner MacKay. Unless
clemency is extended, Mary Gowan
will die on the scaffold on Feb, 27,
the same day on which her brother-
in-law, Allan Cowan, who was found
guilty of perpetrating the actual mur-
der, is to be executed.
Egypt Gets. Constitutional Govt.
Cairo' -King. Fuad signed a royal
decree, restoring constitutional' .gov-
ernment to Egypt. The constitution
provides for a senate and chamber of
deputies and takes control of Egypt's
internal affairs oiit of British hands.
It does not, however, affect Britain's
control of Egyptian foreign affairs,
nor the British military protectorate.
Transatlantic Air Service by 1937
Washington -Regular transatlantic
air service for 1937, with four round
trips a week by giant passenger -mail
planes, was projected as the "confi-
dent hope" of officials of four Gov-
ernments. A formal statement issued
at the close of the week of conferenc-
es between British, United States,
Canadian and Irish Free State Govt.
representatives said "understandings"
reached on a reciprocal basis had rais-
ed the "hope" for the 1937 objective.
Testifies 25 Toronto Police
Are Robbers
Toronto—A band of 25 police con-
stables known as the "100 per cent."

Huron Synod Wants Law Observed
Annulment in Quebec of marriages
performed by Protestant clergy has
brought a strong protest from the
Anglican Diocese of Huron. The sy-
nod diocesan executive committee de-
clares in insists on a recognition of
the law in all provinces.
Conservatives to Hold Convention
Toronto -The executive of the On-
tario Conservative Association decid-
ed to hold a convention at "the ear-
lies possible date" after former Prem-
ier Geo. . S. Henry had expressed wil-
lingness to carry on as party leader
until a convention was held. Deadline
for holding of a convention was set
at May 15, 1936, but it was indicated
the party leadership would be decided
before that date.
Forced Holiday for Windsor Schools
Windsor—An extra week's holidays
has been declared for the public
school children in both the old City
of Windsor and the Town of River-

Two More Arrests in Labatt Case
Russell Knowles and Herman Kier-
dorff; Detroit gangsters, were arrest-
ed in Ottawa, Illinois, on Wednesday
last week in connection with the La-
batt kidnapping, They waived extra-
dition and were taken, to London,
Ont., and • on Friday appeared before
the Police Magistrate and were xe-
mended without being asked to plead.
They both stated Meisner, who is now
in Kingston Penitentiary, was not
connected with the Labatt kidnap -
Ping.

Arrested in St. John, N.B.
for Blyth Theft
After a headlong bight to -the At-
lantic Coast, Clifford Gromildby, 25 -
year -old Owen Sound deaf-mute, who
is charged with the theft of money to
the amount of $2,500 from the person
of Joe Coulter of Blyth, was arrested
Wednesday last week at Saint John,
N.B., 'where he visited a former lady
friend at her home, which was being
watched by police. Chief of Police E.
M. Slader effected the arrest. When
arrested the man had only a few hun-
dred dollars left, and was driving a
new car, Police state he admitted the
theft when apprehended.
Grimoldby, who had been at Wing -
ham for some time, was one of a
party at the Coulter home on Sunday;
Dec._ 1. It is alleged wine flowed free-
ly and Coulter showed three rolls of
money, totalling about $3,300. He
later missed the money, and: accused
Grimoldby of stealing it, but the
young loan submitted to a search and
was exonerated after which he 'left
Coulter's.
Tracks led police to believe that
the young man had thrown the mon-
ey ' beneath a rose bush outside the
house, then picked it up on his way
out. A roll containing $800 was found
under the kitchen table; presumably
where Grimoldby had dropped it. His
flight was traced to London, where
he took an early train Monday morn-
ing, for Montreal, thence making his
way to Saint John. He will appear
in Goderich Police Court probably
Dec. 19th.
New Office Equipment
for Registry Office
Modern filing equipment to the
value of about $4,000 is being install-
ed in the registry office, replacing an
antiquated system that hadbeen in
use for decades. Reeve George El-
liott, of Clinton, chairman of the pro-
perty committee, expressed himself as
being well pleased with the equip-
ment, after a tour of inspection. The
new filing system was purchased on
order of Col. W, W, Dennison, in-
spector of legal offices,

Seaforth Resident Has 91st Birthday
Mrs. Allen Murray, one of the most
highly esteemed residents` of this dis-
trict, celebrated her 91st birthday at
her home on Goderich street, rSea-
forth, on Tuesday last, when she was
the recipient of 'congratulations and
good wishes from a large circle of
friends. Although suffering from fail-
ing eyesight, Mrs. Murray is active
despite her advanced age and pos-
sesses all her faculties:
Stove Blown to Pieces But
No One Was Hurt
On Sunday morning while two oc-
cupants of the home of Mrs. Porte-
ous were still in bed and another had
gone downstairs and was working
around, the stove in the kitchen ex-
ploded and pieces were hurled about
the room. It is thought that there
was something the matter with the
water front and upon becoming over-
heated the accident occurred. For-
tunately no one was near the stove
at the time and no other damage re-
sulted.—Mitchell Advocate.
Fingers Injured
Bill Webster suffered a painful
hand injury Tuesday last week while
at work in the IocaI furniture factory.
Bill was starting to do some work on
the power sander and in some manner
his hand come in contact with the
machine which in a moment had
gouged off to the bone the ends• of
two fingers. He received as the same
time, a couple of lesser injuries, one
of which was on the opposite hand,
and altogether Bill will be off work
for a while until the injured digits
heal.—Lucknow Sentinel,

meeting in Paisley, with County Mast
