Father Time turns the Leaf of 1933 over on Sunday night an- other year of stress and strain will have become a page in history. The people of Canada, despite these dis- turbing times have carried on with a spirit of courage that is a wonderful example to the Youth of to -day To forecast the fate that 1934 has irr store for us all would be a very difficult task but many are of the op- inion that things are on the up -grade and that business will be better for all. We sincerely- hope that these pre- dictions are right and . that all our readers and, friends will have a Hap- py and. Prosperous New Year. * * * * RE DRIVING LICENSES, The section of the Ontario High- ways Act relating to driving licenses "does not apply to any member of His Majesty's permanent forces in the Dominion of Canada, while he is driv- ing a motor vehicle, property of his Majesty in the right of the Domin- ion, while on military or public duty, and in obedience to the order of a superior officer." Such was the finding of Mr. Jus- tice Armour at Osgoode Hall in the case of Lawrence A, Rhodes of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who had been charged and convicted by a Po- lice Magistrate at Eastview of 'oper- ating a motor vehicle without a li- cense. The conviction was quashed. What are driving licenses for, rev- enue or protection? If they are for revenue, only, this case matters but little, but if drivers' licenses are is- sued as a protection, to the public then any person, no matter what their status may be, should have a permit, and if the law has a loop -hole which out a license then the law should be changed. *IT PAYS TO HAVE COMPETENT OFFICIALS Last week two officials of the On- tario Municipal Board were in Lis- towel to investit;;ate the financial eon - clition of that town and to report back to the board if an investigation should be held and a Government audit made of the town books more particularly of the year 1930. This investigation would dist,so we are informed, about $2000. Recently the County was put to great expense due to the County Tea- surer making a mess of his books; It pays to have competent officials and Wingham is most fortunate to be in this class. 1. * * * Aldermen in Brantford voted them- selves $200 for their services during the year. Councillors in Wingham serve without remuneration, ak e * * It is rumored that Babe Ruth is go- ing to ask for his release from the New York Yankees so that he will be free to take over the "13abe Ruth .Yids' League in New York. We wonder if his press agent has started the usual ballyhoo earlier than usual. * * * * The inmates at Kingston . Peniten- tiary were given a special Christmas Dinner and that is as it should be, not only for these inmates but all people of Canada. * * * „s A girl of 19 asked the Hamilton Magistrate to sendher to Portsmouth Penitentiary. It seems to us that she did that when she decided to be a bandit. * ,k * .l. There were 114 nominated for the vaiious municipal offices at Toronto. One would imagine that the people could pick good representation from such a large list * * Ontario's civil servants have had part of their reductions in salary res- tored. That was a real Christmas pre- sent. * .* * e Hespler's strike was settled Iast Friday but this did not give the work- ers long to collect a decent pay check. allows members of His Majesty's for • Christmas. The more we read and Permanent forces to drive a car with- hear of these strikes the more we are convinced that some plan to forestall' these strikes should be in force. The plan, naturally, would have to protect both workers .and employers.' HIGH SCHOOL CHRISTMAS EXAMS, FORM V Trigonometry Class I -L. Waller, C. McLean, E. Jenkins. Credit -=J, Pollock, J.
