BORN WITH TEETH
Every baby is born with teeth. Oc-
casionally, at birth, one or more can
be seen, but .usually they are still
hidden from sight in the ,guns where
they have been forming for several
months before birth.
The kind of teeth which the baby
will have depends chiefly upon the
foods eaten by his mother during her
pregnancy and, after the baby is
born, while she is nursing him. To
build strong healthy teeth, mineral
salts, .especially salts of `calcium
(lime), are required. Vitamins are
also needed to ensure proper dental
development. That is one reason why
expectant and nursing mothers should
use milk and milk products, eggs, ve-
getables, especially the leafy one's,
and fruits.
The teeth with which the .child is
born gradually 'appear, and, by the
end of the first'ear, the has
 baby
cut six or eight teeth, and twice that
number` by the `•end of the second
year. 'Teething may be painful and
,..day' cause the :baby to be, cross and
restless, but teething does not cause
illness, A common mistake that is
made is to blame every baby illness
on teething, with the result that not
infrequently there is serious delay in
s_cc:uring ' proper care for the sick
child,
To ensure healthy, even and strong
second or permanent teeth, it is ne-
cessary to take good care of the first
teeth, even though they are but tem-
porary ones. The first teeth are
needed to allow the child to chew
his food,.,and, in• this way, help to
develop :leis jaws and nourish his
body, He must eat plenty of tooth
building. foods if the permanent, teeth
are to be well built, and his jaws
must be developed in order to allow
room for the second teeth, •
The first teeth also .serve as guides
for the second set, keeping proper
spaces for them. Neglect which leads
to decay and premature loss of the
first teeth frequently prevents the se-
cond teeth from coming through in-
to their proper position.
Before his teeth come, the baby's
mouth does not require cleansing.
The teeth should\be cleansed with a
soft brush, after each iric;al. After t.ax
'second year, sighs. of decay' should.;
be looked for, and after his thir,d
birthday, the childshould begin his
regular visits to the dentist to receive
any preventive treatment that May lae
required,
fiaby teeth may become. ,abscessed;
and the abscess may fneni what as
known as a =gutn-boil. Cont -boils
should never be neglected as some';
tints abscessed teeth give rise to ser-
ious trouble.
Parents who care for their baby's
teeth arid` who; protide their growing
child` with plenty of 'tooth -building
foods are ensuring for their child the
great advantageof strong, healthy
teeth.
