LEAGUE WELCOMES ( Town Council Holds December Meeting The last regular meeting of the Seaforth town council for 1945 was held in the council chambers on Monday evening with' all members NEWCOMERS TO PARISH The Catholic Women's League" of St. Janes' Church sponsored their first "Young people's Night," in the Separate school hall Friday evenin• g 'with a fair attendance. Deaths totalled 46, of which 24 were resident and 22 non- resident: Statistics in connection with the deaths showed there were 9 infant deaths, then none till after the age of 40. There were 27 deaths of people over 70, and none above 90, and no deaths from former com- mon death -producing diseases. The town water was in first class shape according to • i samples sent t to the government laboratory. while two samples of water from private dug wells had been reported as danger- ous. angerous. The town's pasteurized milk showed the usual favorable test. in splendid style. Edmund Daly show- ed moving pictures, including Egypt and New Orleans. A quiz contest, con- ducted by Miss Alice Daly, was won by Miss Joan 'Devereaux. Luclzy door prizes to Miss andMissLoretto Bannon. Lucky spot dance prizes were won by Mrs. Frank Sills, Mary Margaret Cleary and Jos- ephine McIver. WILLIAM MORRISON Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for ]Mir. William Morrison, who died at his home en Jarvis street in his 88th year. Councillors expressed the opinion. that a scheme like this should be for returned 1nen of this war building new homes, to be given 4 or 5 years exemption. A resolution from the North Bay council, disclosing that Alberta hard cool of excellent quality is now available, and asking all municipali- ties to contact the fuel controller with a view to permitting this new coal to be brought to Ontario, was endorsed by the Seaforth Council. Mayor Cluff gave as his opinion that it would be good business on the part of our council to endorse LIONS CLUB PLAN ORATORICAL CONTEST The annual Oratorical Contest for Secondary School pupils, sponsored by the Seaforth. Juvenile' I won't, said the King, - � Jortl•tn Red Light MEETING OF SEAFORTH BOWLERS AND CURLERS The annual joint meeting of the Seaforth Bowling Club and the Sea - forth Curling Club was held Mon- day night. W. J. Duncan, the retir- ing president oe the bowlers, thanked' the officers for their co- operation during the past year, and paid special tribute to the women, stating that Seaforth had an excel- lent women's club which co-operated 100 per cent, giving considerable money wbich helped to build the modern fireplace in the club house. The treasurer's report, given by 0, NI. Smith, showed the bowling club to be in good financial stand- ing, Charles P. Silas, chairman of the grounds committee, stated that the grounds and building of the bowling club were in better condi- tion than ever before. George John- stone, convener of local tourna- ments, reported the "success of local tournaments held throughout the season. An election of officers for the bowling club resulted as follows: president, Charles P. Sills; vice-pres. George Johnstone; secretary, R. 'J. MAE LANE AUXILIARY L The Mae Lane Auxiliary of North- side United Church held their Christmas meeting on Tuesday even- ing, Dec. 11 at 8 o'clock in the base- ment of the church. A background of Christmas greens and lighted candles made a pretty setting r the candlelight service. Mrs, Moffat, Cpt. of circle 4 had charge and opened the meeting by reading a poem "Candle"light,. burning bright" A duet by Lois Hoggarth and Helen Currie was beautifully Tendered accompanied on the piano by Mrs. ,Grace Hoggarth. The scripture was read by Mrs. Moffat after which we sang the hymn "The race that long in darkness pined." Several members' of the junior choir then sang Christ-, mas carols responsively between scripture readings. A solo His Holy. Hour" was delightfully sung by Miss Lois Hoggarth, accompanied by Mrs, James Stewart at the piano. After singing "As with. gladness men of old" Lois again favoured with solo, "The First"Nowell" with the audience joining'in on the chorus. Mrs. Workman led in prayer and "It came upon a midnight clear" was sung. The choir then sang `How Silently" and was much enjoyed.' An interesting Christmas story "Where love is, there God is" was told by Miss Fennell and was much enjoyed. Mrs. Goudio, 2nd vice -prey. then took the chair and read a poem entitled, "Courtesy" Prayers were offered by Miss Wilma Seip and Mrs, A. Ross gave a temperance reading en- titled "Victory before Beer." Re- ports were given by all the officers in connection with W.M.S. and W. A. and each one showed a success- ful yeas.. A vote of thanks to all officers and returning officers was given by Mrs. MacFarlane and Mrs. C. Hillen. The worship period was opened by singing verses 1 and 2 of hymn 51.
