Mr.. and Mrs. Alex McMurtrie and daughter of Toronto spent the week- end holiday with Mr. and Mrs. John McMurtrie and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McMurtrie. Mr. Glenn McNaughton and Miss Helen McNaughton of Toronto, spent the weekend at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne McNaughton. b Mrs. Jack; Col ett and Connie spent the weekend at the home of Mi. and Mrs. Leslie Adams, in Lon don. Miss Kathleen Jones and friend of Toronto visited over the holiday with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jones, Mrs. A. L. Case returned home after spending several days at the home of her parents, Mr, and Mrs. John Reid in London, the former having undergone an optical opera- tion in St. Jospeh Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John Duncan and babe returned to Toronto after spending the past two weeks with Mrs. Duncan's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne McNaughton. Mr. and Mrs. James Smilde re- tuimed home after spending the past few weeks in Toronto at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shepherd. Miss Alma Bell left on Monday for Toronto where she has accepted a position with the Bell Telephone Company. 3'Ir. and Mrs. Pete Buchanan of St. Thomas, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bell and family. Mr. John A. McEwen received word of the death of his sister, Mrs. Bert Fowler in Wolseley, Sask. She was the former Jessie McEwen and was born and educated at Hensall. Following her marriage 3S years ago, she went West and took up re- sidence. Besides her husband she is survived by one son Mansel, Worse - ley, Sask., three sisters, Mrs. Postel', Winnipeg, Man., Misses Edith and Lillian McEwen, London, and one brother John McEwen, Hensall. Miss Elaine Beer spent the week- end holiday with friends in London. The Hensall Institute members and guests held a delightful social evening in the Town hall, on Wed- nesday night, May 17th. Progressive euchre formed the entertainment, the prize whiners being 1st, Mrs. C. Cook; 2nd, Mrs. Devlin; 13 tables were in play. Consolation, Mrs. Ross Love; lucky chair prize, Mrs. Drys- dale. Delicious refreshments were served at the close. The following ladies were in charge of the arrange- ments: Mrs. F. Beer, Mrs. J. Pater- son and Mrs. A. D. McEwan. The 'proceeds which are not definitely known at present, will be handed over to the Community Building Fund. Other similar events will be held in the future to aid this project. Hensall Institute members are re- minded of the District Annual sche- duled to take place in the. Zurich Evangelical Church on June 8, be- ginning at 10 a.m., D.S.T. The ladies are asked to meet at the Town hall at 9:30 a.m. Transportation will be arranged. A large representation is urged. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Voth and family and Mr. and Mrs. Boots of Detroit spent the weekend with Mrs. Louis Simpson. • Miss Helen Moir of London, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Mel- vin Moir. Mr. and Mrs. Don Rigby and Don- na of Blenheim spent the weekend with Mrs. Rigby's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart McQueen. Mr. James Sparks of Ingersoll spent the weekend at the home of his sister Mrs. Daniels. Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson of Lon- don, spent the weekend with the latter's mother, Mrs. Annie Saunder- cock. Mr. and Mrs: G. M. Drysdale and Mrs, Elsie Case spent the holiday at the former"s summer home, Lake Huron. The Mission Band of. Carmel Church met on Friday afternoon and presented a short program for the mothers and babies of the Cradle Roll. Mrs. P. A. Ferguson presided over the program, assisted by Mrs. C. Forrest and Mrs, A. W. Kerslake. The opening chorus by the Band was "Mothers of Salem" Billie Ker- slake and Marney Hildebrandt gave recitations. Shirley Bell sang a solo. Joan Johnston played a piano solo. The map which the members colored was reviewed by- Bobbie Baynham, Roderick Ferguson, Donald Mac Laren, Jimmie Baynham, Billy Ker- slake, Marney Hildebrandt. Several. action songs by the juniors were en- joyed. A chorus was sung by Joan Johnston, Shirley Bell, Margaret and Gladys. Moir, Lola Volland and Lois Tinney. Mrs. ,Cameron, Superintend- ent of the Cradle Roll, spoke to the Mission. Band and presented a Cradle Roll and diplomas to mem- bers of the Roll. Mr. Frank Wood, an Old Boy of S. S. 1, Tuckersn'lith, will be the guest speaker at their section partY Friday night. An. excellent arrange- ment of readings, vocal and instru- mental music, and a variety ofdance numbers by popular local artists will. follow an Empire Day program by the pupils. from the many inquiries t om this section an official of the Huron Co-operative Medical Services, will be present to explain their hospital- ization plan. Mr. Elgin Rowcliffe has also kind- ly consented to come and give us the benefit of his experience in the planning of Hurondale's most suc- cessful Old Boys' Reunion. All in- terested in staging a similar event for the White School, on the occa- sion of its fiftieth birthday next year should try to be present, so that an organizing committee can be formed. Council Meeting A special meeting of the village Council held Friday 'evening at 8 p. m. in the Council chamber with all members of Council being. present,. to consider matters pertaining to the drain, hearing a delegation, and setting the tax rate for the year. A deegation from the Bowling Club was present, consisting of Walter Fairburn and W. 0. Goodwin, they explained that they were authorized by the Club to offer to give the vil- lage the property of the Club for Park purposes, if acceptable to the Council. Parke and Middleton, that we accept the offer of the Bowling Club to donate to the village the Club property to be used for Park purposes. Carried. Accounts on the drain read as follows: Charles P. Deitrich, part of contract price, $150.00; John Cor- bett, labor, total ;$ 6lfred Smith, la- bor, $1.76; Brown and Jones, that the ac- counts. as read be paid. Carried. Brown and Middleton, that the tax rate be set at 41 mills or a total tax- able rate of 40 mills be composed of the following rate: High School. 2.1 mills; Public School 11. mills; Coun- ty 7. mills; Park' 1 mill; Library 1 mill; village 1.9 mills and that a by- law be prepared confirming same. Carried. Parke and Jones, that by- law 11, 1948, adopting the assess- ment and setting tax rate, be given first and second reading, Carried. ,(35 mills taxable 1947). Middleton and Parke, that by-law 11 be given third and final reading and finally passed. Carried. Jones and Brown, that the clerk be instructed to add the drain assessments as approved by the Court of Revision, to the col- lectors roll. Carried. Middleton and Brown, that we now adjourn. BRODHAGEN On Tuesday evening two drama festival plays were presented here in St. Peter's Lutheran Church base ment. One was "Bobby Sox Bri- gade' presented by Luther League members of Zion Lutheran Church, Stratford. The other "Pot Luck", was presented by members of the Sebastopol Lutheran Church Luther League. The former was chosen the winner. On Wednesday evening the La- dies' Aid of St. Peter's Lutheran. Church celebrated its 16th anniver- sary. The members of the congrega- tion and merngers of the Ladies' Aid of Ellice Lutheran Church were gnests. After a short service with Rev. Paul Eydt of Ellice as guest speaker, 'a program followed. A mixed bouquet of flowers adorned the altar in memory of the late Mrs. S. Frieder'ichsen, who passed away in December, 1933, and who was the organizer of the Ladies' Aid. The male chorus of Waterloo Col- lege presented a fine concert of sa- cred and secular music in the church on Tuesday evening with a large crowd in attendance. Mr. Eric Schultz, son of Rev. and Mrs. W. Schultz, student of Water- loo College, is a member of the Male Chorus. Misen- er", owned and operated by 11. H. Misener and Sons, of Port Dover, moved to Bayfield on Saturday and will fish out of here for the season. it is a large steel tug carrying a crew of five men. Perch fishing is exceptionally good from the piers and last week- end saw large crowds taking advant- age of the good catches. On Sunday morning a large sea- plane was forced to land on the north side of the river owing to the dense fog, it was en route to Sud- bury, four nen from Toledo, Dr. J. R. Robinson, Jack Hennis, Len Bar- rett and T. Cooke were aboard, they stayed in the village until the fog lifted and then continued on their trip North. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ring of Sarnia spent the weekend with the lattei's mother, Mrs. C. Parker, on their return they were accompanied by Mrs, Chris.
