Big Role in Flight
Giant German Dirigible is
Equipped With Latest Types
of Wireless Apparatus;
Ship and Shore Stations
Will Follow the Air-
ship's Progress
As the Couzht Zeppelin. . the new
-'Germain dtl'iglble, einbarks fro n Fried-
ricilshafen on her 3,500 -mile non-stop
flight to Lakehurst, radio will flash
word of its safety throughout the en-
tire journey, Dr. I-Iugo Sicknor, de -
Mater of the 'ship, following trial
flights last week, predicted that radia
is destined to play an important role
in the success of the venture by fur-
nishing meteorological reports and,
bearings.
Because of the importance stressed
upon the value of radio, the operating
room hasbeen situated adjacent to
the chartroom, The equipment is of
most n.odern design, consisting of
three distinct units. A. medium and
long wave Telefunken transmitting.
set will be unit for communicating
with high-powered land stations and
ships encountered on the ocean high-
ways en route.
Should it be impossible to establish
communication on the regular com-
mercial channels a short wavesend-
ing set has been installed. Due to.
short wave transmission phenomenon,
it will be possible for the dirigible
party to communicate with 'the 'United
States soon after taking the air..
Should low wave commercial stations
Mil to hear the Count Zeppelin radio
signals, radio amateurs will in all prob-
abolity be able to pink upthe mes-
sages and relay them to their destina-
tion,
A. third transmitting set is carried
for use only in cases of emergency.
Should either the long or short wave
sets fail to function, the auxiliary ap-
paratus may be pressed into service.
All commercial telegraph stations
along the proposed route of the Count
Zeppelin have been notified of the
wave lengths employed by the ship
and asked to keep a sharp oar. Sta-
tions in Germany, England and France
will be the first to establish contact
with the dirigible on its westward
trip.
Ships on the high seas . along the
route have been notified by wireless
of Dr. Eckner's plan to start the flight
to -day and will keep watch both for
radio signals and sight of the lighter -
than -air craft. Weather reports and
forecasts will be broadcast especially
for the flyers.
In addition to the telegraph appara-
tus, the Count Zeppelin carries com-
plete direction Sinding equipment.
Should it be impossible to determine
position by "shooting the sun" due to
fog, this radio apparatus will enable
the navigator to calculate their exact
position.

In no other disease does the blood
become thin so rapidly as in rheuma-
tism., Not only floes it beoomo thin
but it is loaded with impurities --
rheumatic poisons. Witbout the pro-
olleumatie poisons, Without the proper
treatment `those poisons increase, the
inflamed joints Swell and the. patient
'becomes a cripple. Most treatments
simply aim to keep down the pain,
,hence with every- unfavorable con
dition a renewed attack follows:
To cast out rheniilatism the blood
must be enriched aucl the rheumatic
poisons driven out with the natural
secretions of the body ..This can best
be done through a course of Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills, which have a spe-
cific action on the blood, giving it new
richness and redness. Thousands, have
tried this treatment with beneficial
results. That every 'sufferer from
rheumatism who does not try Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills is neglecting the
most hopeful means of recovery is
shown by the statement of Mr. David,
Carroll, Piotou, N.S., who says:—
For years I was troubled with rheu-
matism. The pains were not continu-
ous, but they always returned, and
kept getting worse. I tried so•ealled
electric belts and many medicines,
but .did not get more than temporary
relief. Only those who have suffered
from this trouble will realize what I
suffered at times. I had begun to
despair •of getting better when a
friend urged me to 117 Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills. In a short time I could
feel this medicine helping me, so 1
gladly continued taking the pills and
8000 found that every trace of the
trouble had disappeared and there
was a groat improvement in my gen-
eral health. It is now two years
since I took Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
and I have not bad the least twinge
of the trouble in that time. That is
why I confldently'recommend the pills
to other sufferers."

A National Question With
International Interest
Beauty spot or power plant? The
modern answer appears to be "a little
ofboth." Use the falls as far as pos-
sible for power development without
injuring them as a spectacle. The
engineer's old contention that beauty
should be entirely sa:crifiecd to utility
has been abandoned, according to an
editorial writer in The Engineering
News -Record (New York). Says this
paper:
"Many divergent views have been
expressed on the preservation of Ni-
agara
iagara Falls and the amount of water
that may be diverted for power pur-
poses. Some of these views cameto
the front at the receht meeting of the
American Society of Civil Engineers
in Buffalo. But the most important
part of the discussion there was the
first official publication of the Special
International Niagara Board's interim
report. The board recommended the
immediate undertaking of certain
remedial measures in order to divert
water from the centre to the Banks
of the, Horseshot Fall and to the Am-
erican Falls, but it failed to express.
Itself on whether more water may be
diverted for power purposes without
harm, after the remedial measures
bave been taken. This latter question
ought to be answered squarely in the.
board's final report, since it is an in-
separable part of the subject for
whose study the board was instituted.
The beauty of the Falls is at issue
only because water -is being drawn
for power development, and because
it le desirable to draw still' more if
it can be done without injuring -the
impressiveness of the great natural
spectacle. The day 18 past when many
people will agree with the view' ex-
pressed by Lord Kelvin that the Falls
should be laid bare to provide the
maximum amount of power; but, on
the other hand,. few' will go to the
other extreme of maintaining that the
Palls slunaa be left untouched even
Though they may be seriously injured
by erosion, and even though proper
engineering measures will enable
,great amounts of power to be obtained
without detracting from their beauty.
It is only the extremists on either side
who :do not realize that the waters
e f" Niagara have two distinct values,
the esthetic and the power value,
S0tnbwhere between the two extreme
views lies a point at which -both ptr-
'epees can be served Without undue
injury in either, and one o? the great-
est services the Special International
Niagara Board could render' would be
to attempt to determine Where that
point lies."

when: a eonviceed murderer agreed to
permit himself to be inoculated with
leprosy 'germs,
The murderer's name is Kirsteia

which will make him a leper.
Professor Sulker, chief of the Army
Medical Corps, will inoculate Iiirstein
with the bash.. At first only a small
injection will be given and the Pro-
fessor will study the disease in its
early stages.
Later the leprosy will be developed
through various steps at advanced
stages of the disease, and the profes-

progress. It is expected here that the
study will be of value in the creation
of a cure.

Wood Land
Toronto, Ont.—Sale of eighty-one
square miles of pulpwood and jack
pine in the Township of Simpson, one
hundred miles north of Sault Ste. Ma-
xie, to the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Co.
and the Algoma Central Railway, Is
announced by the Department of
Lands and Forests, Queen's Park,
Tho purchase involves the cutting
rights to about 50,000 cords of pulp-
wood, 63,000 railway ties and 200,000
feet board measure of Large jack pine.
Prices realized by the Department
were $2 a cord for the pulpwood, 151
cents per tie and $G.50 per thousand i
for the jack pine. The purchase is'
a joint one, the pulpwood to be used
by the Abitibi company in their "atilt
Ste. Marie mill and the ties going to
the Oigona Central for road construc-
tion.
The Department stipulated that the
pulpwood should be taken off at the
same time as the jack pine in Order to
avert the danger of a fire hazard,
which otherwise might arise at dif-
ferent times. In past years the Gov-
ernment has put up 'small areas for
the Algona Central Railway in order
to provide timber that is not available
on the company's own land.

too much to expect them to demand

Objects to Use of Term "Rayon"
New York—The Celanese 001501a -
tion of America has taken issue with
the Better Business Bureau of New
York City, Inc., on the latter's
recent recommendation that the word
"rayon" be used in conjunction with
the name of its product. Its objection
is basedon the ground that Celanese
is 80 distinctly different from rayon
in its chemical and physical properties
that the adoption of the bureau's re-
commendation would cause confusion
between the fabrics and articles of
the company and these now referred
to as rayon. The company farther
contends that the bureau has n0 au-
thority to name a product, and that
its action in this case can only result
In confusion and misrepresentation.
The company points out, in addition,
that the local bureau's recommenda-
tion is contrary to the position taken
by the National Better Business

Came
Dawn came with a high wind trum-
gating anti a rain of yellow leaves
in the orchard, The hosts of the
day arose to greet her and start her,
singing, like a bareheaded, brown -
eyed lassie, down the trail. October
morning—what buoyant joy and ex-
pectancy awoke with its sunlight!
Where the Fall's footstep had fallen
the silvery brown and silken rich-
ness of ripened things glowed.
Tiny lingers of the woodbine had
draped the mossy green bowlder
with scarlet garlands.
When the wind swung low at inter-
vals the breath of fruition poured
fragrance on, the air and a melodi-
ous silence touched the heart.
The gnarled and somber yew trees
stood like solemn dignitaries at a
gay carnival amid the forest folk,
dropping their brillian leaves con-
tinuously as before the coming of
a triumphant pageant.
The musical haunts of the summer
going birds wore murmurous with
the sweep of thinning branches,
and the abundant harvest of nuts
baited the tireless squiri'el: Here
and there a dainty and belated blos-
som sang its song of loveliness.
Swiftly sailing clouds rippled in,
shadows along the crisping grass.
The springtime beauty had been trans-
muted into another and even more
gorgeous splendor. October was on
the land and the clay w.ds at its;
dawn.
