FEDERATION NEWS
By J, Carl, Hemingway
With harvest coming along
With the usual rush I can 'only
Ihope the weather is as favor-
able when you read this as when
I am writing it,
Recently a group of interested
Co -Operators from the U.S, sat
+in on a meeting with the "Fame"
Board of Directors. These me
have been operating a Co -C
hog -killing plant for a few years
t
They reported that they hay
had success but returns in pat
renege refunds have been quit
low, In further study they hay
found that only 10% of the profi
in the meat processing trade is
in the slaughtering ;part of the
enterprise while 90% is in furth
er processing.
As a result they were visiting
Canada to learn of the progress
already made in Quebec and the
Maritimes in complete processing
of all livestock and what was
being planned in Ontario.
The Fame Board was interest-.
ed in hearing that killing plants
with only a capacity of 1500 hogs
a week could reach maximum ef-
ficiency. With the share ' sales,
mounting up the Board has de -
aided to have all available infor-
mation on size and types of
plants most suitable to Ontario
presented at the September meet-
ing.
In the light of what we were
told by the U.S. delegation we
are wondering about an increas-
ed number of smaller killing
plants and perhaps fewer larger
complete processing plants. This
system would make delivery of
livestock to plants more conven-
ient for the producers and in the
case of fresh meats it might make
a real saving in transportation
costs.
The Board is quite interested
in getting this study underway
as early as possible so that defin-
ite steps may be taken by mid-
November when we are quite
hopeful that sufficient share capi-
tal will be available to purchase
locations and call for building
tenders.
This, of course will - call for
more canvassing to be done 'but
already some counties are close
to their objectives and it is just
a case of the rest of us pulling
our share of the load.
In the latest report of the Dairy
armers we are still in some dif-
culty in the sale of milk prod-
ts. In spite of all the adverse
opaganda regarding animal fats
is still a definite fact the coun-
ies showing the highest con-
niption of milk have the heal-
thiest people. We would do well
to keep this in mind for the sake
of our children even if we are
tempted to save a few cents on
our own diet.
I am glad to say that recently
I have been finding more agree-
ment among the various Dairy
Groups in the matter of market-
ing. I feel quite sure that the
worst they can do together will
be better than the best they can
do divided.
