WHEN AURORA BOREALIS
UPSET THE TELEGRAPHS
Sunday's disturbances, caused by
sunspots, recalls a sotnewhat singlet'
experience on March 23, 1908, which
was attributed to an aurora borealis.
The date of the latest visitation was
March 24.
Thirty-two years ago a writer in
the Toronto Telegram pointed out
that "of late years the North Atlantic
cables, which formerly suffered exten-
sive interruptions to the passage of
signals from this cause, have seldom
felt tete effect. This Is due probably
to the constant application of new
c1evicec to render signalling more
perfect." But on Sunday even the
cables wore disorganized, so that it
must have been an extraordinarily
strong disturbance. The writer nf.
1008 pointed out:
"The paralyzing effect of magnetic
storms upon telegraph wires has been
observed since the infancy of tele-
graphy. At least as long ago as 1858
the phenomenon was noticed on Can-
adian lines. This was approaching
one of the maximum periods. for the
aurora in its full strength is present
Omni every eleven yenta:. Violent e'b'
feces were experienced again about
1870, and hoer in 1881 and 1892. It
was rather more than twenty-five
years ago that 11 repairer in a tele-
graph office in Toronto, seeing a
switchboard on fire from this cause,
rushed out for a pall of water. and
returning deluged the apparnt114,
making matters 7)111011 worse,
"Veteran operators who worked
through the trying periods of 1881
and 1892 and who expected a recur-
rence in 1903, were surprised at the
relative freedom from the phenome-
non: To have been consistent with
previous e periee•e, there 811001d
have been nnmernus slight interrup-
tions in 1902, unci a climax of pro-
tracted seizures in the following year,
it is 0 matter for astronomers and
odea scientists to determine hon far
the great eruption of Mont Pelee and
the several earthquakes which occur-
red in those years were responsible
or what other cause existed; at all
events it is known that theexpected
rec111en1 and extensive manifestations
of the phenomenon of Aurora Borealis
dfd ant take place.
"Iuring the prevalence of mag-
netic storms the effects of these nat-
ural" currents are felt on telegraph
lines in various ways. Sometimes the
currant of a light volume reinforces
tate current from tile' dynamo mach-
in(., remaining steady in quantity and
constant in direction It is only ep es-
sary then to adjust the receiving ap-
paratus higher. Fifty yea's ago it
was found possible to work a wire,
for e, longer or shor1e' Period. (hiring
a display of aurora, with the aid of
the earth current alone, end it is the
delight of operators everywhere to
duplicate this experience and thus

have it to relate that at such a time
I hey woi'kP,i a wire without a battery.
"A generation ago, when the mo-
tive power in telegraph offices was
the old bluestone chemical battery.
t(10 effects of the aurora were quite
easily overcome by joining up two
wires in one circuit, eliminating the
'ground' entirely. and obtaining one
clear worsting wire at the cost of two,
With the modern dynamo current
this is no longer practically possible.
Earth currents are, however, very
seldom steady. They alternate rapidly
in direction and vary vastly in force.
At one moment through their opera-
tion the current is entirely removed
from a wire, and the next i1 returns
with such strength as to make the
a(1)uslmenl of the apparlus impos-
sible, and even to cause fnetug of
magnet wires and miniature rontia-
grat.ions at key points and at switch-
board, elicit as iustuneed above,"

WHEN AURORA BOREALIS
UPSET THE TELEGRAPHS
Sunday's disturbances, caused by
sunspots, recalls a sotnewhat singlet'
experience on March 23, 1908, which
was attributed to an aurora borealis.
The date of the latest visitation was
March 24.
Thirty-two years ago a writer in
the Toronto Telegram pointed out
that "of late years the North Atlantic
cables, which formerly suffered exten-
sive interruptions to the passage of
signals from this cause, have seldom
felt tete effect. This Is due probably
to the constant application of new
c1evicec to render signalling more
perfect." But on Sunday even the
cables wore disorganized, so that it
must have been an extraordinarily
strong disturbance. The writer nf.
1008 pointed out:
"The paralyzing effect of magnetic
storms upon telegraph wires has been
observed since the infancy of tele-
graphy. At least as long ago as 1858
the phenomenon was noticed on Can-
adian lines. This was approaching
one of the maximum periods. for the
aurora in its full strength is present
Omni every eleven yenta:. Violent e'b'
feces were experienced again about
1870, and hoer in 1881 and 1892. It
was rather more than twenty-five
years ago that 11 repairer in a tele-
graph office in Toronto, seeing a
switchboard on fire from this cause,
rushed out for a pall of water. and
returning deluged the apparnt114,
making matters 7)111011 worse,
"Veteran operators who worked
through the trying periods of 1881
and 1892 and who expected a recur-
rence in 1903, were surprised at the
relative freedom from the phenome-
non: To have been consistent with
previous e periee•e, there 811001d
have been nnmernus slight interrup-
tions in 1902, unci a climax of pro-
tracted seizures in the following year,
it is 0 matter for astronomers and
odea scientists to determine hon far
the great eruption of Mont Pelee and
the several earthquakes which occur-
red in those years were responsible
or what other cause existed; at all
events it is known that theexpected
rec111en1 and extensive manifestations
of the phenomenon of Aurora Borealis
dfd ant take place.
"Iuring the prevalence of mag-
netic storms the effects of these nat-
ural" currents are felt on telegraph
lines in various ways. Sometimes the
currant of a light volume reinforces
tate current from tile' dynamo mach-
in(., remaining steady in quantity and
constant in direction It is only ep es-
sary then to adjust the receiving ap-
paratus higher. Fifty yea's ago it
was found possible to work a wire,
for e, longer or shor1e' Period. (hiring
a display of aurora, with the aid of
the earth current alone, end it is the
delight of operators everywhere to
duplicate this experience and thus

have it to relate that at such a time
I hey woi'kP,i a wire without a battery.
"A generation ago, when the mo-
tive power in telegraph offices was
the old bluestone chemical battery.
t(10 effects of the aurora were quite
easily overcome by joining up two
wires in one circuit, eliminating the
'ground' entirely. and obtaining one
clear worsting wire at the cost of two,
With the modern dynamo current
this is no longer practically possible.
Earth currents are, however, very
seldom steady. They alternate rapidly
in direction and vary vastly in force.
At one moment through their opera-
tion the current is entirely removed
from a wire, and the next i1 returns
with such strength as to make the
a(1)uslmenl of the apparlus impos-
sible, and even to cause fnetug of
magnet wires and miniature rontia-
grat.ions at key points and at switch-
board, elicit as iustuneed above,"
