Zone six of the Ontario Cream
Producers held their directors
meeting Nov. 6 in Clinton, The
main topic of discussion was the
increasing stocks of skim -powder
and butter.
Two years ago, nnleas a defiu'
rte change in production- occurr-
ed. Canada was moving steadily
,into a serious shortage of both
these products. The change tool(
place and now wa are faced with
over production.
1Vhen we were heading to a.
shortage the floor price for but'
terfat was 58e. The Government,
in 1951 permitted the addition of
storage costs to the re -sale price
of butter. This increased the
Price of butterfat to 62 to 62o.
ISlrilu-Powder,, in previous times
dropped as low as 11c and at otil'
ors' rose to 18 or 19c. The sup-
port price was set at 17e while
the Dairy Farmers of Canada
asked for 1Gc and one farm or-
ganization demanded 21e.
The zone meeting drafted a re-
solution which it Mopes will give
the farmer a fair return, will re-
duce the stocks of butter and
powder and provide the consumer
with an excellent food at a Price
lie can pay.
Whereas there are large stocks
of butter being built up and
whereas unemployment is seri-
ously ai(fecting butter consump-
tion, therefore be it resolved that
the Government be requested to
provide a consumer subsidy of
l0c per lb, of butter and that the
Government continue with tate
policy of a support price for but-
ter that will bear a fair relation-
ship -to the cost of production.
