WOMEN'S INSTITIU'TE
The August meeting of the Auburn
Branch of the Women's Institute was
held on Tuesday afternoon in 'the
Forester's Hall, and was very well at-
tended. The children were guests of
the Institute and provided the pro-
gramme. In the absence of the pre-
' trident, Mrs. J. Woods presided. Fol-
lowing the opening ode, Mrs. C. A.
" Howson led in the Lord's Prayer. A
" letter was read from Mrs. Fraser,
Wingham, re the officers rally, and
• one from Miss Flora Durnin. Dungan-
' non, in connection with Junior Inti-
• tute 'work. Miss Marjorie Toll and
Eleanor Wilson were appointed to
- take charge of the Leader's work here.
A communication was read from Miss
Esther A. Slecter re the Home Con-
ference in Room arrangement on Oct.
22. Mrs, J. Woods was appointed to se-
cure a home. Next meeting is grand-
• mother's Day, and Mrs. Herbert Mog-
ridge was appointed convener of the
' programme committee. The pro-
gramme was as follows: Piano Instru-1
mental, Betty Asquith; . solo, Lenore
Plaetzer; Recitation, "Throw a Kiss,"
Jewel McClinchey; Recitation, "The
Dinner Gong," Lillian Nevins; Reci-

DEATH OF WILLIAM DOERR
The death occurred on Thursday a-
bout 9 p,m. at his home in Auburn of
William Doerr. Mr. Doerr Was 'one of
,the oldest 'residents of the district.
He was in his 89th year. Although in
failing health . for some time he had
only been seriously ill for two weeks,
William Doerr• •was born in Ger-
many and canoe to this country when
two years of age with his parents,
John and Catherine Doerr. When he
grew to manhood he lived for some
time at Roseville, where' he followed
the occupation of cooper. He did
carpenter work at Lisbon and then
moved to Auburn district where he
lived' on the farm now owned by Hon-
ry McClinchey, then where Joseph
Miller lives, and later where Alvin
Leatherlsw now resides. He retired
to Auburn about 18 years ago. He
was twice married, his first wife be-
ing Miss Mary Chambers, • who died
28 years ago. Later he married Mrs.
Harling, who predeceased him seven
years ago.
He was for many years a ineniber
of the Lutheran church, and since the
discontinuance of that church here he
has been connected with Knox iPresby-
terian church.
Surviving are .two daughters: Mrs,
Jacob Heinbuch and Mrs. Edwin,Hein•-
birch, Stratford; and three sons, John,
Hullett; Joseph, Laird, Sask.; and Al-
bert, Linwood. One daughter, 'Mrs.
Robert Gibb, of Londesboro, died some
years ago. There are four sisters liv-
ing: Mrs. Joseph Steizik, Galt, Mrs.
John McClinchey, Auburn, Mrs. W.
C. Weaver, Auburn, and Mrs. John
Bittner, Detroit. There are also 17
grandchildren.
Joseph Carter of Port Elgin and
Mrs. J, W. Carter spent a clay in God-
erich visiting. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson
Hill.
George Rick; Kitchener, is visiting
Gordon Beadle.
Miss Margaret Ferguson has re-
turned from a visit to Parkhill.
Miss Dorothy Craig, who has been
spending her holidays here, has re-
turned to continue her course in Strat-
ford General Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rutledge of
Seaforth called on Mrs. J. D. Howatt
on Wednesday.
Mrs, A. Rollinson, Murray and Iso-
bel, have returned from a visit to
Windsor.

McLEOD—WRIGHT
The wedding took place on Satur-
day morning at 11 o'clock at Knox
United Church Manse, of Mabel
Wright, daughter of Mrs. Wright and
the late David Wright of Goderich
Township, to David Parrish McLeod;
son of Mrs. McLeod and the • late
John H. McLeod. The ceremony was
performed by Rev. H. C. Wilson. The
bride was dressed in Maroon Sheer
crepe with matching accessories. The
couple were unattended. Following
the ceremony they left on 'a trip to
Toronto.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sheppard and
family and Lois Ferguson have re-
turned from a trip to Sunderland.

WOMEN'S INSTLTUTE RALLY
The District Annual Officers Rally
of the Women's Institute of West
Huron was held in the Fore'ster's
Hall, Auburn, on Wednesday after-
noon, August 18th, with a good atten-
dance. Mrs. Fred Oster, Blyth, the
District President, was in charge and
Mrs. Clarence Hayes of Georgetown,
the Provincial representative, was
the guest speaker.
In her opening remarks Mrs. Hayes
explained the object of the rally as,
(1) A training school for officers of
Branch Institutes to help; them devel-
ope and maintain strong leadership;
(2) To strengthen the leadership;
(3) To snake home makers better wo-
men, and to make women better ]tome
makers.
The morning session was given to
the discussion of finance and the
appointing of a nominating commit-
tee which is to be composed of Mrs.
Robert Davidson, Dungannon, as con-
vener, together with the President of
each Branch, This committee will
.function for the next District Annual
meeting. Plans were discussed for
raising money. It was decided it was
not wise for an Institute to undertake
anything which will cover a period
of years.
A picnic lunch was served at noon.
The afternoon session opened with
singing "The Maple Leaf", Mrs.
Hayes then very thoroughly took up
the subject of Parliamentry Proced-
ure, explaining in a very clear man-
ner the workings of this intricate
proceeding.
The roll call was answered with
nine branches, Blyth,.Belgrave, Lon-
desboro, St. Augustine, Goderich;
Wingham, Dungannon, Clinton and
Auburn -responding, Mrs. Hayes gave
instructions en the duty of members
to the President and of the duty of
members re -accepting office, also on
standing committees buymanship,
and nutrition.
The meeting closed with the Na-
tional Anthem.

man's Institute will be held in Com-
munity Hall, Thursday, September
2nd at 2.30 p.m. They will entertain
the three neighbouring branches:
