This lady, formerly Mary Jane Bali,

Annie Garbett was born on the Base
Line, Hullett on the farm now owned
by Sid. Lansing.'
Rev. and. Mrs. H. C. Wilson were
M Oakland on Saturday attending a
wedding, and on Sunday evening Mr.
Wilson took part in the evening ser-
vice of Central United Church, Strat-
ford, where his brother-in-law, Ret-.
J. F. Reycraft preached his farewell
sermon.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore and
-daughter of Hamilton visited over
the weekend with Mrs. Moore's broth-
er, Mr. Edgar Lawson and Mrs.
Lawson.
Miss Dorothy Craig of Stratford is
'visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Craig.
A reception was held in: the For-
ester's Hall Friday night for Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Bogie who were recently
married. Dancing was the form of
entertainment for the evening. The
couple were presented with a purse
of money, the presentation being
made by Eileen McPhee and Mrs.
Everett 'Finnigan reach the address.
Mr. Bogie very fittingly replied.
Haying is in full progress in this
district, and the crop is reported as
being very good. One farmer upset
his first load• of hay this season,
'which was a rather unlucky start.

Women's Institute
The Women's Institute held their
monthly meeting in the Forester's
Hall Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. -
Edgar Lawson in charge. The meet-
ing was opened by the singing of the
Ode. Mrs. Herb Mogridge opened'
the meeting with prayer, and the sec-
retary's report was read and adopted.
A letter of appeciation Was read
:from Mrs. Thomas Jardine. It was
decided to have Miss Icing, the sec-
retary, write the manager of the
'Forester's Hall •asking Shinn to see -
about having the outside of the hall
painted. Id was decided to visit the
County Hone at Clinton on the even-
ing of July 7. Mrs. James -Woods and
Mrs. F. Ross are to look after the
transportation, and Mr. Gordon Tay-
lor, Mrs, 0. E. Erratt, Miss Joseph-
ine Weir and Mrs. C. A. Howson are
to Iook after the program for the
availing.. Mrs. Gordon; Taylor and
Miss Helen Taylor sang a duet. MM.
James Woods gave a report of the
.'strict Annual held in Goderich re-
cently. After this report, Miss Jos-
ephine Weir led in community sing-
ing. It was decided to have the hist-
ory. of this Institute written up in.
book form. Sherman Murray gave a
recitation, after which lunch was
served, the hostesses being Mrs. J. C.
Stoltz, Mrs. Chas. Straughan and
' Mrs. John Wilson.
Mrs. James Woods received' word
of the death of her sister, Mrs. John
Anderson of New York. Mrs. Ander-

The B. Y. P. U. held their monthly
meeting in the church basement on
Thursday evening, with Harold Reid
in charge.' The meeting' opened with
a sing -song, after which Frank Raith-
by led in prayer, Bill Raithby read
the scripture and Shirley and Lloyd
Silver sang a duet, Lloyd playing the
guitar, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Camp-
bell and Mrs. Elmer McDougal sang
a song, also Lloyd and Marjory John-
ston gave a number. Rev. A. E.
Silver gave the topic en "Courage
and how badly needed it is today".
Mrs. Silver and Shirley sang a duet,
and Rev. Silver closed the meeting
with prayer. "
A ball game was played on the
diamond tonight. with Westfield, op-
posing Auburn. The score ryas 22-10
in favour of Westfield. The pitcher
for Auburn was Wes. Bradnoek and
the pitcher for Westfield was Har-
vey McDowell while the catchers were
Gib. McIlveen and Graeme • McDowell
for Auburn & Westfield respectively.
Death of Mrs; Joseph Potter
It is with regret that we report the
death of Mrs. Joseph Potterwho died
early Wednesday morning, June 28th,
after an illness of several ' months.
Mrs. Potter was formerly Mary Ann
Horney and was, born in Usborne
township on November 28, 1866, a
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
James Horney.. She had lived in this
community all her life. Mr. and Mrs
Potter were married May 12, 1886,
and celebrated their golden wedding
in 1936. Mrs. Potter is survived by
her husband; two daughters, (Ruby
Mrs. William Haggitt, Auburn, and
(011ie) Mrs. George Baxter, Goder-
ich; two sons, Forest, of Goderich;
Joseph of Sault Ste,'Marie. One son,
Jacli, was killed during the Great
War. Brothers and sisters also sur-
viving are John of Brighton; Mrs.
Ernest D. Kneeshaw, Meaford; Win.
Horney, Cargill; Levi Horney, Brins
earth, Manitoba; Edward, Goderich,
and Thomas of Brantford. There are
nine grandchildren. The funeral ser-
vice will be held at her late residence
on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., Rev.
H. C. Wilson of Knox United Church
officiating. Interment will be made
in Colborne cemetery.

The services in Bayfield United
were conducted by Mr. Colin Camp-
bell in the absence of the minister,
Rev, R. M. Gale. Mr, Campbell chose,
his text from Mark, Chapter 8, verse
26, "What shall it profit a man if he
gain the whole world, and lose 'his
own soul?"
The heroic death in Detroit of Of-
ficer Rabbi last weekend was learn-
ed here with genuine regret for he
made many friends while 'spending
his 'summer vacations •at Bayfield.
Last year he rented one of William
R. Jowett's cottages and had engaged
another for this year. He was quite
popular and was frequently seen in
the company of Capt. Lewis McLeod
on regular fishing trips. His death
occurred while endeavoring to ap-
prehend, a
p-prehend,a couple of thugs who were
participating in a bank holdup. Al-
though receiving two bullets from
the gun of one of the mon he remain-
ed faithful to duty. Pulling his awn
gun with almost his last breath he
succeeded in. fatally wounding his as-
sassin.

last. Sunday morning,., having two
texts: Genesis -1-1 "In the beginning
God"; Daniel 6:27 "Thou art weighed
in the balances and found wanting."
Here we have two ways of living.
How we all need to put God first in
OUT lives. The speaker told of so
many countries who had failed be-
cause they did not put God first. He
also told of the curse of drinking
liquors. It had caused more loss of
life and more ruined homes than wars
or pestilence. Many moderate drink-
ers
rinkers have tried the gold cure but after
a time it has failed. The only cure
for the drink habit is faith in Jesus
Quist who is all powerful.

The last regular meeting of Brum-
field Young People's Union Ives held
on Monday, June 12 Maty- McCully
was the convenor in 'charge. After
singing the hymn "0 God Our Help
he, Ages. Past'; the 'scripture lesson
was read by Anna Aikenhead and Mr.
Wright led in prayer. Mary McCully
read the topic on "Adventures in Self
Control." This was followed by a
short discussion and business period
during which Mr. Wright presided for
the election of officers for next year.

president,' Archie Mustard; treasurer,
Elsie Smith; press sec., Delis Dutot;

On Friday evening, June 16, about
35_ young people, including Y. P. U,
members and their friends, met at
the beach south of Bayfield for the
annual weirner roast. The early part
of the evening was spent in contests
and games around the camp fire.
Then all ate heartily the weiners-and
rolls and: watermelon. An enjoyable
evening is reported by all who were
present.

Death of George McCiinchey
A gloom was cast over the com-
munity on Saturday, June 171h, in
the passing on of a clear friend and
neighbor, Mr. George McClinchey,
who although not in the best of
health was going around in his usual
way until Saturday noon when he
passed peacefully away from a heart
seizuve in his 65th year, The deceased
was :a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Mc0linchey, Stanley twp., and
was one of a family of thirteen, 9
having predeceased him. Mr. Me
Clbnchey. farmed successfully for six-
teen years on the Goshen Line, in
1918 moving to the Bayfield road
where he had since resided. He leaves
to inourti, his wife, formerly Annie
Armstrong; three sons, Wilmer, Ern-
est and Jack, of Varna, and two,
daughters, Mrs. Emerson Kyle, Kip -
pen, and Mrs. Ivan Steckle, Bayfield.
One brother Arthur, Stanley twp.,
and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Hart, of
Brucefield,- and Miss Eliza, also of
Stanley. The funeral which was
largely attended, was held' from his
late 'home on Monday afternoon, Ser-
vices were conducted, by. the Rov.
Peters. Interment in Bayfield' come-
tery. The floral tributes were nnany
and very beautiful.. Ile pallbearers
were Jno: McAsh, Ed. Foster, Alex
McConnell, W: J. Johnston, Arch Gal-
braith and Was Reid. The flower
bearers were Lee McConnell, Glenn
Dowson, Fred and Emery McClineitey
and Elmore Stephenson. Much sym-
pathy is extended to the bereaved
wife and family.
