Last of the Schooners
J. T. Wing, last three -masted
schooner on the -Great Lakes put into
Goderich port last Tuesday at 9 a.m.
towed by the tug Jno. R. Stover. She
had a cargo of cedar posts from the
north shore and was bound for De-
troit, her home port.
She had by passed Goderich harbor
several miles when a gale blew np
and it was decided to turn back.
Her skipper a Nova Scotian, who
has seen action in this war, including
a torpedoing, explained the presence
of the tug by stating that it was now
impossible to find a sufficient num-
ber of sailors in these parts ,who un-
derstood her canvas sufficiently to
operate the schooner.
During the day the Wing was visit-
ed by the large group of sea cadets
at Kitchigami, who came here aboard
the R,A.F. crash boat "Duck". The
boys were immensely interested in
the old schooner and her rigging and
the water trip gave them an oppor-
tunity to,find their sea legs.
While here the Stover took oncoal,,
gasoline and groceries.
