The Women's Missionary Society of :.Knox Presbyterian Church held their monthly meeting at the home of a for- mer member, Mrs. Janes Howitt, Seaforth. Mrs. Edgar Lawson was in charge and ,opened the meeting with . prayer. The scripture was read in eni- Son and prayer was offered by Mrs. Howitt. The topic on "Italy" was giv- en by Miss Mary' Houston and *solo ' was rendered by Miss Josephine Weir :a paper on "The Power of Prayer" ' was given by Mrs. Lawson The roll call was responded to by a verse of scripture containing the word "Be- 'lieve". Arrangements were mate for 'the fall Presbyterial which will Le held in September at Blyth. Mrs. J. ; C. Stoltz invited the ladies to her home for the September meeting. A vote of thanks was extended Mrs. Howitt' for' her hospitality. Lunch was served by Mrs. Howitt and her"dau- • ghter, Mrs. Huge Chesney. Mr. Andrew Sheppard, 77 year-old farmer and cattle huyer shipped from the Auburn Station 52 head of Here- ford cattle in three railways cars. the cattle averaged 1,400 pounds They were sold to Mr, ,Mose of Ayr.Mr..Sheppard purchased the cattle last September in Saskatchewan Mrs. Frank Raithby is under the ,doctor's care. Her many friends hope .for a speedy recovery. V-- HOLMESVILLE Group 3 held a quilting at Mrs, S. 'Walters on Thursday with +a.pot luck .supper. Mr. and Mrs. William Jervis and daughter Lola and Mr. and Mrs. J. Sutter of Clinton spent the week end at Port Elgin, Dr. Rhoda C. Edmiston, formerly -of Blyth is visiting Mr. and Mrs, Lorne Jervis. East has been assisting in caring for her father David Po- cock, Holmesville, who is quite ill with a heart condition. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Newton and two children of London spent a week's holidays with Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Newton. Mr. and MTs. Jas. Lockhart re- ceived a Mable telling them of the safe arrival of 'their son, Pte. Ivan Lockhart, 87 Artillery Coy, R.C.A. S.C. overseas. Neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. John- ston last Monday evening to honor their son Elmer who is home on leave Pte. Johnston was presented with an address, a pen and pencil set a money belt and some cash. The August meeting of the Porters' Hill Unit Red Cross was held at the home of Mrs. Les, Cox Monday Aug- ust 16, about 30 ladies were present. Two quilts were quilted for refugee bale. Some quilt blocks were brought In, and some given out, for quilts next month, 10 pair boys socks were packed, 20 ribbed helmets for prison- ers'were asked for, these to be ready next month.: Most of these were giv- en out among the lady knitters, a lovely plate donated, was won by Margaret ,Torrance. The salvage has not yet been disposed sed of so .anyone having more leave at John Torrance's farm. Next Meeting to be held at Mrs Bert Harris'. --V HULLETT TOWNSHIP The August meeting of the Lafalot Club was held at the home of Mrs. Robt• Freeman with a good attendance The meeting opened with a hymn followed by the Lord's Prayer rep eat - •ed in unison. The report was then given and other items of business were dealt with. It was decided to 1 rnalce a layette and each member to bring an article towards it at the next meeting. The usual two quilts 1 were quilted, At the close of the meeting a ten cent tea was served by the hostess. The meeting closed by singing the National Anthem," RESIGNS G. W. SPINNEY Finance Minster Ilsley announced on Monday resignation of George W. Spinney, of Montreal, as chairman of the, National War Finance Com- mittee because of "pressure of oth- er responsibilities." • Mr. Spinney who is president of the Bank of Montreal, had been chairman of the committee since its inception early in the •war. The announcement said G. F. Towers, governor of the Bank of Canada, has agreed to be come general chairman while K. A. Forrest, 87, died last Wednesday at his home, 46 Woburn Avenue, Toronto. . Born in Huron County, Mr. For- rest went to Toronto following his retirement in 1930. He was a mem- ber of the Masonic Order, London Capter, R,A.M. and Glenview Pres- byterian Church. He was a charter member of Brucefield Lodge, I.O.O. F. His wife died two years ago, Sur- viving is a daughter Mrs. Gordon A. Stewart, GODERICH TOWNSHIP The S. S. No. 4 Red Cross Unit met at the home of Mrs. H. McCart- ney, Mrs. F. Jones, presided at the meeting which was opened by re- peating the Lord's Prayer in unison. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted, and the trea- surer's report showed a balance of $11.46. The roll can was responded to by seventeen members and seven visitors: Following the business dis- cussion, the meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem. A reading on this portion of Scripture was given by Marianne Mervin; also a poem was read by Jos- ephine Muir. The prayer was given by Joy Lobb and letters AV thanks were read from Mrs. Reuger, Mac. DEATHS GRIEF—Died August 5th, as result of place accident, on active service Warrant Officer Milton Eric Griff, beloved son' of Mr, and Mrs. H. S. Griff of Stratford, Ontario. LUCAS—In St. George on Saturday, August 7th, James Edward Lucas in his 61st Year. v Last of the Schooners J. T. Wing, last three -masted schooner on the -Great Lakes put into Goderich port last Tuesday at 9 a.m. towed by the tug Jno. R. Stover. She had a cargo of cedar posts from the north shore and was bound for De- troit, her home port. She had by passed Goderich harbor several miles when a gale blew np and it was decided to turn back. Her skipper a Nova Scotian, who has seen action in this war, including a torpedoing, explained the presence of the tug by stating that it was now impossible to find a sufficient num- ber of sailors in these parts ,who un- derstood her canvas sufficiently to operate the schooner. During the day the Wing was visit- ed by the large group of sea cadets at Kitchigami, who came here aboard the R,A.F. crash boat "Duck". The boys were immensely interested in the old schooner and her rigging and the water trip gave them an oppor- tunity to,find their sea legs. While here the Stover took oncoal,, gasoline and groceries. Sat and Holidays Matinees—Sat. and Holidays at 3 OBITUARY JAMES EDWARD LUCAS • The death occurred -at his home in; St. George or James Edward Lucas, eldest son of Mr. Alfred Lucas of Clinton,. -on Saturday morning, Aug- ust 7th. Tho deceased was born in Richwood Hoar Brantford sixty years ago and resided there until, as a young man he 'married and went to Brantford to live. Over twenty years ago he left there and farmed near. fit, Seooe, where he became well known as a breeder of good stock. One year ago he retired from the farm and resided in St. George. Surviving besides his wife, are three daughters( Ada) Mrs. Williams (Helen) Mrs. G. Russell and (Mil-, died) Mrs. Reeves; four grandchild- ren; his father in Clinton; two sis- ters, MTs. Flewelling of Fergus and Mrs Stewart Taylor of Clinton; four brothers, Williain of Deville, Alta., Bert of Mottnt Pleasant and Pred and Lorne in Brantford. Two sisters and two brothers predeceased him. The funeral on Monday was largely attended and all, members of his family were present with the excep= tion of his brother in the west, Rev. McIntosh, one time supply minister at Clinton and Brucefield churches conducted the service. V VARNA' Mrs, George Connell, Mrs. Harold Connell, Varna, and Mrs. Roy Con- nell of Tuckersmith attended the fun- eral of the late Mrs. John McGee of Goderich township on Sunday last. ' Mrs. George Connell is at present nursing Mrs. Cantelon in Hensall, Pte Floyd McAsh of the R.C.A.F. P. 0. St, Jean Que., spent the week end with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jno, McAsh, Pte. Donald Keys of the Royal Navy London, is spending a few days at his home. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ray of St. Mary's and Miss Florence and Mr. Fred Jamieson of Blanchard, were Sunday guests at the honte of Mrs. M. G. Beatty and Miss Mossop. We are very sorry to report that Mr. John Rathwell is in Clinton hos- pital but his many friends hope scon to see him out and around again. Miss Nettie Clark has returned to the village after spending her holi- days with friends at Sarnia. Mrs. Jno. Aldington has returned to her home after spending the past week with her parents at Skaffa. Mrs, M. G. Beatty and Miss Mos - sop spent Tuesday afternoon with the letter's sister;, ;Mrs, Jas. Stephen- son in .Alexandria Hospital Goderich. V HOLMESVILLE The W.M.S. and W. A. of Holmes- ville United Church held a joint meet- ing at the home of Miss Acheson on Tuesday afternoon. August 10. with Mrs, S. Walter presiding, The meet- ing opened with a piano solo by Mrs. Norman followed by, The Lord's Pray- er in unison. Mrs. Palmer read the Bible lesson John .Chapter 15 vs 12-27, after which Mrs. WF Yeo and Mrs. B. Trewartha offered prayer. A vocal trio by Misses Marie and Eileen Glid- den, and Gloria Palmer was much en- joyed. The topic "Fellowship in the World Church." was ably taken by Mrs. Walter Readings concerning the churches in captivity in Holland, Nor- way and-Gerinany.were given by Miss A. Trewartha, Miss June Miller and Mrs, Cudinore. A poem entitled "Con- tentment" was read by 1VIrs. E. Pot- ter. After a business discussion, Miss Gloria Palmer and Miss June. Manning, and roll call was responded to by a verse of scripture containing the word "Rejoice." Mrs. Watson give the treasurer's report. Mrs. Webster contributed a temperance reading. Th word for the September meeting will be "Love." There was quite a discus. siot on entertaining at the Sectional Meeting which is to be held in Lond- esboro in October. The meeting was then taken over by Group No. 1 with Miss B. Kirk in charge. The theme was "Christian Stewardship," • on Time" Those taking part were, Miss B. Kirk Mrs. F.
