'OBITUARY`
JOHN FRANKLIN JOHNSTON
Despite very unfavorable weather
one of the largest funerals' ever to
take place in the townsip was that of
ex -reeve John Franklin Johnston of
Ashfield. After an illness of a few
months he passed away Monday, Dec.
22nd in his seventy-fifth year, Frank
Johnston served his. township as
reeve, councillor, auditor and school
trustee for many years. Of a kindly,
honest and upright disposition he was
respected and honored by all. who
]cnewAim. He •'Was • the fourth son
Urn to the late Mr. and Mrs. Aicbi-
bald'Johnston, pioneers • of Ashfield;.
In early life he taught ,school at
Ripley, 'Sault Ste. Marie, Lifford and
Leamington. After his marriage to ;
Emily Alberta Atkinson,. of Lifford,
they settled on his farm in Ashfield. ;
The funeral was' held Dec, 24th,
from his late residence -on 10th Con.
Services at the home• and graveside ,
were" conducted 'by'Rev: s_ Dr. Rhoad,
assisted 1* Rev. M•eConnell. Two fav-
orite hymns, "Safe in the Arms of
Jesus" artd etAbide ovith me," .were
sung, A duet "Saved by Grace" was
also sung by Mrs, Robt. Scott and Mr.
D. McKaydining the service.
Left to "mourn are his widow,
two daughters Edith, at home, Macie-
leine Reg,N, .of God'ericb Hospital
staff, a son, Keith of R.C.A.F., now
stationed at Montreal. One brother,
Fred W. Johnston, Clinton, also sur-
vives him. The floral tributes from
the municipality, school section, Agri-
cultural and Social C'ludit Goderich
Ii,ospital, Staff, friends' and •relatives
were numerous and beautiful testify-
ing to the esteem in which he was
held. Those' who bore hien to his last
resting place` in Greenhill cemetery,
Lucknow were six of his life long
friends: Phillip Hogan, Robert Nel-
son, John Fanish, John Little; Donald'
McLean, • William Baldwin: •
Relatives and friends were present
from London', Strathroy, 'Watford,
Weoxeter, • Goderich Clinton' and
Flint,~Mich:
"Phe field is not far off where we,
must give the world a proef of deeds',
—not words. Quotation.
We all have serious and sober
thoughts before us in this year, of
distress and difficulty. May we re-
member the ideal of "Good Will To-
ward' Men." We do thank you and
express herewith our appreeication of
your goodwill and patronage during;
the past year. May our service con-
tinue to be a factor in the oonvenienee,
arid we trust advantage, When buying
and may 1942 bripg the world peace'.
and prosperity.
An explanation—perhaps an .apol-
ogy --Goode ' formerly produeed quickly
are now subject to delay, in some
cases unobtainable. We can only
crave' your indulgence and explain
that while it is annoying to you it is
disappointing to us. It is, has been
and will be our continued effort to
maintain adequate stocks, but since
we ame handicapped as outlined above
this willnot always be possible.
There has been no increase in our
prices since the basic period (Sept.
15 to Oat. 11) and we will of course
eontinue to co-operate with our Gov-
ernment in this respect.
It has been an annual suspicion with
us at this period of years that„the
folk generally du not appreciate the
pleasure, sometimes advantages in
keeping a diary. The 5 year style is
ever popular, you get the pleasure
daily in making • your entry and again
years hence in reviewing it.. Sweet
memories are always a source of
gratification and ,sometimes fun.
