So glaringis the commercial- . ization. of this event that one news- paper paragrapher asks: "Did you . • remember the florist. on Mother's ' Day?" and another puts the query:, • 'Whith is correct: ‘Suriday is Moth= ,er's Day' or `Sunday is florist's day?' Miss Evans certainly started seine- ' thing when she suggested that every- one wear a white carnation on Moth- er'S Day. In England in the long ago ' 'Mothering Day" used to be:honour- erby, bringing mother a certain Iciud of calce. Were this the fashion now ,:the bakers would be the beneficiaries instead of the florists. ' Of coarse we can understand that there is a great min -on the fidists' supplies for this one day or few days, and that they -wish to "make hay while • the stin shines," but it doesn't look , ;just sporting that they should, lust beeaase they know that people will Pay it, ,pil on ",all the traffic will. bear." The second 'Sundey in May is a lit- tle early for our garden flowers and . it might be a good plan to set the - -day the first Sunday in June, -when flowers are more plentiful. ' Then those who wished or. could afford it . might buy the hothouse flowers, qth- , ers,who cannot afford to 'spend much money but wish to remember mother might bring an offering from their , own garden. After - all the day was intended as a tribute to 'motherhood, not as a. --day for the enrichment of florists, The matter of the weekly hal holiday during the summer months . a custom which had spread until i was observed pretty generally in ou towns and cities, has lately been Coln ing in for some criticism and corn towns are discontinuing it. The ide was first to give the clerks and busy ness men, who have to keep such tat hours on Saturday evening, one hal • day in the week in. Which to get-ott into the open and enjoy something o the pleasures of the summer season It was a laudable motive and scenic to work out fairly well for soine years. The fariters at first made some • eomplaint as it was inconvenient for them if the particular! day on which the stores were closed happened to be the day they found it convenient to • come to town but they accomodated • themselves to 'it, More or less, just as they accomodate themselves to the • the fact' that the banks are closed each Saturday afternoon, the most in. . convenient day for both busine§sinen " and farmers, and we had Caine to take -the weekly half holiday as a matter of course, But the past year or so thete has been a reaction. The city ; • mocha -rite decided to cut out the I- weekly half holiday and to arrange a plan of allowing each employee a half •-- holiday in. the week, keeping the place of business open -the full six -days. This change was brciught abbitt ., 1)y, the growing volume of tourist - -trade.
