Mr. George Mawson, r teacher of Tlsborne township, who retired' id- , ter f-,ter teaching forty years, was pre- ' re- `sented'-with a cane, Well, we sup- pose •he would have worn out all his• -'canes iii forty years. This is the season when "children. should be taught to swim, Every. --healthy -Canadian child 'should •'be ' • taught to swim,- to respect the .strength and the treachery of bod- ,ies of water, to handle a canoe' and boat carefully and, when old, enough, -to drive a ear with due regard to ••the safety of all concerned. There is no use in ruling that children must not go near water or drive cars. ' In- •etsleate in them a sense of honour sand of responsibility, ,,. teach thein •what: they: need to know and they -will not go. far wrong•, Reckness- •nese and irresponsibility are the ecause of most aceidents with both cars and boats: The Sea£arth Expositor is inclined• •ao agree -with The Toronto Daily ;Star that the: present pessimistic trend, (they seem to be fully agreed' •that •there is a pessimistic' trend), is ••due not to the decline in'stocks or any dullness in trade but to a• .lack -of strawberry .shortcake:. That may account for it in the Star and Ex- positor offices, though'we. are not -quite sure, but personally we have not noticed any shortage. of short 'cake. W :have smacked our editor- ial lips over several,. excellent ones this season, ,accepting second help - Inge with a fine disregard of our stern resolve to keep slim' and sup- • pie, ,. S- Tint that dark outlook on life to which the Star. and Expositor frank- 'ly confess, may not have anything to do .with such things as dining at all. Can it be that the possible re - 'salts .of the forthcoming election are casting dark'shadows before : and rendering these fine summer days dark and"gloomy to their eyes?.
