1OF INTEREST TO YOU.
AND ME
;Arthur Ford-, editor of the Lon-
adon Free Press, ,is president of the
Western Ontario Conservative As-
, :sociation, ;but this :city fares even
better as W, 3. McCully of Stratford
holds the cash,—Stratford Beacon -
herald.
Yes, maybe, but N. W. Teewartha
• of, Clinton who is an auditor; will see
that he gives a strict accounting of
it
Saturday is Victoria Day, May
:24th, "The Twenty-fourth" does not
•seem to mean quite so much to the
presentgeneration as it did to their
fathers and mothers. Time was
when that date was looked forward
to from the time Christmas and New
Years was out of the way. Probably
it came on Saturday occasionally,
but we do not remember that. )t
seemed always to mean .a holiday,
-and a holiday was'so'inothing to look
forward to. Then for days before,
you were startled every now and
then by the discharge of a firecracr-
• er which some eager youth. could
not refrain from setting off. (Ev-
•er boy who could iv
yace dsora e up a 'five
f e
cent piece had fire crackers in those
days, the old, ordinary red kind in
hunches. The elaborate fire works
of the present day were unknown in.
• rural Ontario in those days.) The
night before the great day there was
• tremendous excitement. Firecrack-
ers bad to be bought, ;the probability
-being that if they had been bought
before many had been already used,
decorations had to be put up, pre-
parations had to be completed for
picnics, etc., and the children had to
be got to bed as early as possible, as
-there would be no keeping them in
'bed in the morning. •
Then, when' morning came there
was no sleep for anyone after day-
light, especially for those who lived
in close proximity to the blacksmith
...shop, as the patriotic blacksmith al-
ways opened .ithe celebration by fir-
ing one mighty gun. He accomplish-
, ed this by placing one anvil' en top
of another and filling the space be-
tween with powder, which he touched
off at break of day with 'a mateh.
' The resulting. bang would almost
• have waked the dead. ' It did jar the
windows in every house in a ceiltain
little village in Ontario on many a
'24th morning. That was the signal,
and from then until every bey and
girl in the village was so dead tired
• that further activities were impos
•sible, the celebration went on. What
did we do? You might ask, rather,
"what we didn't. The Twenty-fourth
• was the first holiday of the summer
and we put into its celebration all
'the pent up energy of Ithe winter;
all the enthusiasm of healthy young
animals, held in check for months,
but which now, looking forward to
the long summer, was given full
play. Oh, the Twenty-fourth was cel-
ebrated right royally and loyally,
'way back in the latter part of the
last century.
'COLBORNE
We are sorry to report the burning
• of the frame house on the farm best
known as Mrs. Jones', which has re-
cently been bought, by M2. George
Ashton, on Tuesday night, -of last
week. There was no one living in
the house and the cause is so far
unknown,
Mrs. Paul Maedel is feeling a little
better since the cool days set in af-
ter the short little summer wehad
a few days ago.
Mr.; T. Lee visited with his broth-
er, Mr. Willard Lee, on Sunday.
' 'Mrs. Willard Lee is conyalescing at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Service,
the township hall, where they are
caretakers.
1tlr, and Mrs, Will Maedel and
daughter, who -had been at Flint
Maelt., came up to see Mts. Paul
Maedel on Sunday.
The Hydro Commission want one
'tore subscriber before starting their
• plans to build via Benmiller-Smith's
Bill, north.
The members of Smith's Hill
• church voted on Sunday by secret
ballot to elect a manager in place
of Mr, Alex. Young, who was elected
elder a few -weeks ago., The reason
for this procedure according to rules
one person cannot hold two of these
-offices. Mr. C, A. Slobertson was
-elected.
HOLMESVILLE
Mr. Clifford Proctor had the suis-
foi1tune to have the second, finger of
'his left hand injured while working
:about a car at the home of his father
on Sunday,
Mr. Frank Wilson of Sarnia vis-
ited over the week -end at the home
•of his father-in-law, Mr. W. H. Lobb.
Mr, and Mrs, Andrew and Mrs. E.
'Palmer. and son Josephmotored ov-
•er from Detroit, the two former vis-
iting in Goderich and the ;two latter
at the home .of Mr. and Mrs. Proc-
•tor Palmer,
A number -front Holmesville.and "vi-
cinity attended the special services
in Ontario street United church,
Clinton; on Sunday, when Rev. Dr.
Langford, secretary ,of the. Religious
Education Coun.ciI of the United
,Church of Canada was the preacher.
Mr "'Ernest Ellwood, , telephone
'lineman, is not enjoying very good
'health, at 'present. He was being as-
• sisted by Mat Clark of Goderich last
week,
''Twas the eight before pay day,
Wben all through my jeans
I hunted in vain
For the ways and the means.,
Nota quarter was stirring,
Not even a "Jit,"
The kale was off duty,
The greenback had quit
Forward, turn forward'
0 time, in thy flight,
And make it tomorrow
Just for tonight.

'Mfrs, William- •Stanley, who 'died.
M.ay'21st, 1929.
"We watched her Suffer day by day,
it caused us bitter grief.
To see her slowly pine away, • but
could not give relief.:
Long nights, longdays, she bore her
pain,
10 wait .For cure; but all in vain,
Till God, Himself, knew what was
best
He took her home and gave her rest.
For all of us she did her arest, a
God grant to her eternal rest.
She lives in our hearts, she'll never

We hope to meet her bye and bye.",

AIR - MAIL BUSINESS DEVEL-
• OPINE SLOWLY
Special to The News-Record--
Air
ews-Record—Air mail . carried during -the first
quarter of the year, ending March
31, amounted to 144,896 pounds as
compared with 145,375 'pounds for
the corresponding period of last
year.
A large increase in poundage is
expected for the second quarter as
the prairie air mail service was only
inaugurated. in Keith.
During the first three monthsof
this year 958 scheduled trips were
completed along with 101 special
trips in the Mackenzie river dis-
trict. There were, in all 1,231 sched-
uled trips of which 148 were par-
tially completed, and 125 cancelled
because of weather conditions.
The system of estimating air mail
is different in Canada from the Uni-
ted States. Air. mail in Canada may
be carried a 'part of the. way across
the continent, then shipped another
section by rail before it is again
picked up by the planes. The
flights are considered as one, while
in the United States thepoundage
is considered twice in such cases.
"I suppose you know your little
town fairly well," remarked the re-
cent arrival to the oldest inhabitant.
"Rather."
"Do you know Jew's walk."
awe
"Well, they do," replied the re-
cent arrival as he dodged around
the corner.

Vittie wish to. express their sincere
