The Clinton News Record, 1930-05-15, Page 5'THURSDAY, MAY 6; 1.930 'THE CLINTON-NRW71 RECORD HOME CANNING is the title of a new 72 pale booklet which the BANK OF MoNTRgAL has issued and is now { distributing free to all who ask fora copy. This boo14 t describes the latest methods of canning fruits, meats and vegetables. copy maybe obtained on application to any Branch of the BANK OFOiN T1 iA.i.. Clinton Branch: H. R; SHARP. Manager Londesboro (Sub -Agent): Open Monday and Thursday i KOF INTEREST TO YOU AND 'VIE We have had several severe elec- r. trieal storms this spring so far. R * * * Does "the • oldest inhabitant" eve :'remember speedier growth than .have had this .spring? * * * * This week's rain ought to bring ..along any grain which had not start ed and encourage that which had be- gun to sprout, * * 'Tis to be hoped that the electric 'storms will be. ever before the elec- .:tion campaign .gets under way. Too 'much fireworks in the air is a bit • nerve -wrecking to ordinary folk. **** Friday, May 3rd, is Empire Day. 'The Department of Education has this year sent out a very attractive little booklet to the schools with in- " Wresting indignation regarding Em- pire Day and a suggested program to be used in the schools on that day. ' No doubt the teachers will see that -appropriate notice is taken of the oc- • casion. t * • * ,.No doubt the blossoms were a won- derful sight in the peach belt on Sunday last but those of us who were • tunable to See thein did not starve for beauty. You wonld need to close your eyes to miss lovely sights these days. The leaves will be full before • May 24th this year, as they are very nearly full now. The season- is a fortnight ahead of time this year. and Mr. Ross received in dividends during fifteen years something over $78,000, then sold -his shares for over $58,000: Mr. Ross concluded that it paid to be obliging. There is no great money in. publishing a news - ✓ paper or in being connected with one we but most of as would not mind hang- ing on if there was any reason to suppose any such luck might come our way. 4• **• Tom Brown, Stratford embezzler, who left that city on New Year's Day, leaving financial shortnges of over $200,000, died last week in Mex - Eco City,, after a short illness, He bad, apparently, spent all the money he had taken there with him, per- haps all he had out of what he had taken from others, and was seem- ` ingly without friends. A rnan who i might have occupied -a position of • usefulness and honour in his own land, fills a lonely grave in a foreign 1 eountry before he has reached his for- tieth year. Dishonesty most em phatically ..did not pay in his ease. T ** Editing a newspaper has great possibilities and opportunities for adventure, Mr. P. D. Ross of the Ottawa Journal tells a story in his -book of reminiscences of doing a favour to a couple of his friends, also newspaper men, who got into a fight on'Parliament Hill one day and wore in danger of getting into serious trouble had the thing become known by getting into the newspapers. Ke use his'n used rflueneet keep ,a the affair outs andgrateful were they that later on they gave him some shares ' in a company they formed. 'This Company, for advertising in street cars in various cities, made money i * * * * Dr. Gandier made a suggestion at the graduation in connection with the Clinton Public • Hospital on Friday evening last Which it might be well to act- upon. Several improvements are needed at the hospital, an eleva; tor, a fire escape and additional room, which would cost in the neigh- borhood of $10,000. About $5,000 of this will be available very shortly and an elevator might be installed but this would mean the cutting off of the use of a ward on each of two floors, and they cannot be. spared. Dr, Candler thought it would be a very nice memorial to the memory of the late Dr. Gunn to raise the money necessary for an addition and erect it to his honour•. Certainly nothing could be more appropriate. Kincar- dine has a fine monument of granite in its front street to the honour of a beloved physician but a needed addi- tion to the hospital, erected in mem- ory of one so much beloved in Clin- ton and community, would be more truly honouring -to Dr. Gunn than ev- en a marble shaft. It would be more in keeping with his lifelong, unsel- fish devotion to the relief of suffer- ing. **M* The Financial Post claims that the new tariff changes, while favoring some industries, have completely ig- nored the •printing industry, which leads in payment of wages and is only surpassed by the pulp and paper industry in value of production. The Post contends that the tariffs in con- nection with this industry are obso- lete and that they neither serve the needs of the industry nor give to' the government the revenue to which it is entitled. So much fine lithograph- Cal ing.is imported into Canada on the ady pound basis, regardless of value, that the Canadian manufacturers cannot com- pete with it. As a matter of fact we Eng in Canada are obliged to use Christ- Mal mss cards printed in the United end States when we would much prefer our own manufacture, not because our manufacturers cannot turn out just as good work, but because, ow- ing to inadequate tariff on imported stuff, they cannot compete with it. If Canada could even produce the Christmas, Easter, birthday y and at h- er sucha ti s ase al and special cards and booklets needed by her own peo- ple the difference in the wage sheets of the Dominion would bo very net- ceable. The baby needs • fresh air and sunshine in order to build 'tip 'a strong and resistant body. Notdidy pare sunshine baths pleas- ant, but they bring to the baby some- thing he needs. One definite good resulting from the sunshine is that :the action of its rays upon the body of the baby prevents rickets. Sun baths should be taken remilar- ly each day; and, as the• weather grows warmer, these should be talcen out of doors rather than in front of 'the :open window. • There is a right way to talce'sun :baths and this way must lee followed or harm will result. On the first day, the hands and feet are exposed for five minutes.' Next day, the, time is. ten' minutes, and so five minutes a -day ate'added until the bath lasts s for an "hour. the time isinc • As r teased so increased, should there be an extension` of the area of -the-body which is exposed to the sun. On the second day, expose the legs below the knees, then the whole leg; after that, the abdomen, and, lastly, the chest front and back. On the day: each area is first exposed; the time of exposure is five minutes, and this period is increased by five min- ntes each day for. each Part until the whole, body ie given an hour's sun bath daily; The baby should not have his sur: bath just before or after a meal. In • the really hot weather, his sun bath shouldtibe before eleven or after three, so that he may not be exposed to the mid-day sun. In addition to the good that comes directly in the sun's rays, there is no doubt that the exposure of the body to the air—the air bath—is itf bene- fit to the child. - Taking the sun bathout of doors i or in front' of the, window en p endow gives; the baby the benefits of both the sun and the air at the na stn time. ne.
