iOn Monday at Hollywood they
were presenting a medal to Walt
Disney, creator of Mickey Mouse
and other features, known to children
tvho are familiar with the movies for
his "distinguished service to children,"
who invariably enjoy these drawings.
But something happened, he hardly
took time to say "thank you" when
he grabbed his coat and hat and de-
parted, Ieaving the company who had
gathered to do him honour feeling
rather blank, It was soon discover-
ed, however, that he had just got
word of the birth of a little daugh-
ter and he hurried to the hospital to
see how she and her mother were
doing. A very human and everyday
desire on his part, you must admit.
Incidentally, it appears that -this
clever cartoonist i a descendant of
an old Huron County family. His
grandfather, Elias Disney, came out
from Ireland, in 1836 and took up
land dear the 1VIaitland River, where
he built a saw and grist mill, the
first in the community, and fanned
extensively. Iris song Keppie Disney,
married Mary Richardson, a laugh,
ter of one of the early settlers near
Holmesville, and settled on a farm
but later, in 1877, sold but rnd went
to Kansas and young Walt. grew up
and was educated in Kansas. His
Art Studies in the Chicago Academy
were interrupted by the entry of the
United States into the war and he
went overseas with a Red Cross unit,
On his return he went into newspa-
per cartoon work and in 1923 went
to Hollywood. The first Mickey
Mouse picture, which has since be-
come s
e.comespopular,
o especially sincethe
talkies camein, was made 'in the
garage . at his father's home,, and
the family still occupy :the old home.
Some older residents of the sec-
tion where the Disney family settled
may remember this Kepple, who was
probably an uncle of the Kepple who
,lived in •Goderich township so long.
