We have often heard of wooden
Money but never saw any until
shown a twenty-five cent piece issued
by the Chamber of Commerce, Ten-
ino, Wash., by 11rs. W. Manning of
Clinton. This piece was sent' her by
her daughter in Vancouver, B.C., who
had glotten hold.of it in some way!
It is made of thin wood and is about
the size of postcard. Paper and
wooden currency was issued "as part
short time when her parents moved
to Welles Garners. After the death
of her .lather, her mother inarried

lived on the same place as her late
residence.
On December 15x" 1885, she became
the wife of Launcelot Clarke arid re-
sided on the Goshen Line, Stanley,
until 1924 when they retired and
moved to the new, bungalow which
they had erected on the propert?:
just outside the village on the Bruce -
field Road where Mrs. •Clarke had
lived as -a girl.
All her life she was deeply inter-
ested in Church affairs. She was a
life member - of the W. M. Soc-
iety and President of the Ladies' Aid,
In her younger days she was organ-
ist in the Methodist Church. She is
survived by her husband and three,
children, William J. 'Clarke, Varna,
Mrs. Ephraim Bowes, Ridgeway, and
Clifford Clarke, Haani.ton: Amongst
those from a, distance who attended
the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Chas.
Manus, Brown City, Mich.; Feed
Manns, Heiman; Mrs. Armstrong,
Mrs. Wheatley, Mrs. Willis, Toronto,
of a plan of the C. of C. of Tenino Mrs. and Miss Fergie, Miss Fortune.

The A.Y:P.A. of St. James, Mid/
, dleton, St. John's, Varna, and Trinity
Church, Bayfield met at the Rectory
on Friday evening and held a most
enthusiastic meeting. Following the
singing of a hymn, Rev. F. H. Paull
-led in prayer. The minutes of the
'last meeting and the last Annual
meeting were read by the Secretary,
Miss Bessie Cluff, after which the
'Treasurer,' Stewart Middleton, gave
his report. The business for the
past year being concluded, the retir-
ing President. bliss Lucy Woods, va-
cated the chair and Miss Nina
Heard, Vice -President took charge.
' The retiring officers acted as a
nominating conunittee and while they
• were absent from the room games
were played. A vote by ballot was
then taken which resulted in the fel-
' lowing officers being elected for the
corning year: President, Carl Diehl;
Vice -Pres.. Muriel Rathwell; 2nd Vice
Pres., Annie McLeod; Secretary, Gay
Whitmore; Treasurer, Wm. Heard.
It was decided t'e hold a contest and
-Nina Heard and Lucy Woods were
elected Captains for the year. Alvin
Elliott and Leslie Elliott were ap-
pointed delegates to attend the Pro-
vincial A. Y. P. A. Conference at
'Hamilton from October 20-23. The
meeting closed with the Benediction
by the Rev. F. H. Paull..
Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Lynn, who have
resided with Mrs. H. Hinde for the
past year left last week to make
'their hone in Goderich for the win -
stet.
Miss Lola Elliott and D. Howcroft
of Detroit spent the week -end with
the former's mother, Mrs. M. Elliott,
Dr. and Mrs. C. W. Brown who
'have spent the past two months at
• their cottage left for their home in
Clinton, Iowa; on Tuesday.

Clarke, Hamilton, who were called
home owing to their mother's illness
and death, left on Wednesday for
their hones. Mr. Clarke accompan-
ied his son, Clifford, to Hamilton
where he will spend some ;time; It
had been the intention of 'Mr. and
Mrs. Clarke to spend this Winter in
Hamilton and Ridgeway and Clifford
came at Thanksgiving with the in-
tention of taking his parents back
with him but his mother was too ill
so Mrs. Howes remained with her..
Miss Edith Mlcssap who has been
visiting Miss Mary Reid returned tq
Varna on Monday.
Neighbors of Miss Many J. Taylor
became alarmed on Sunday on see-
ing no sign of life around her bons,/
and finding the doors locked, so Mes-
srs. E. Featherston, W. Parker and
C. Weston decidedto break in and
investigate, when they found. Miss
Taylor lying on the floor, unable to
rise but able to talk to them. She
had taken a seizure on Saturday eve
ening and called for help but was
unheard. She had managed to pull
some pillows and coverings from s
couch but was unable to get upon it.

ical aid was summoned and she war,
got to bed and is now improving. un4
der the care of Miss Dorothy Mer-
quis, Reg. N.. and her sister. The
neighbors felt very sorry that they
had not investigated, sooner but al
she often goes away for little visits
they were diffident about breaking
into her house.

BYTERIAL MEETING HELD
AT WII" CHROP ON
FRIDAY
A large number of ladies from the
various auxiliaries in the charges
concerned attended the Wemen's
Missionary Society Conference for
the centre section of Huron Presby-
terial at Winthrop United church
on Friday.
The morning session was in charge
of the vice-president, Mrs. Fowler,
of Clinton. The meeting opened
with a hymn, after which the Eg-
mondville Auxiliary took charge of
the devotional exercises. Following
this an address of welcome was giv-
en by Mrs. Smith of Winthrop to
which Mrs. Gardiner of Londesboro
replied The roll call of auxiliaries.
and circles was then heard and the
offering received.
Mrs. Lindsay of Kinburn rendered
a solo and the reports of the Pres-
byterial secretaries were heard.

and Baby Band followed and the
session was closed by, Varna Auxil-
iary, e
A dinner was served in the base-
ment for all delegates and visitors
by the ladies of the church.
The afternoon session opened at
1..30 pan. with Seaforth Auxiliary
in charge of the devotional period.
Mrs. Ross Savauge presiding. The
Scripture'lesson was read by Mrs
Frost, after which Mrs. NleDermid
ted in prayer. Mrs. (Rev.) Lane of
Seaforth gave a very interesting re-
port of the Dominion Board meeting
held�/p in Toronto recently. Mrs. Col-
in k'ingland of Watton sang a solo
entitled "Somebody," which was fnl-
lowed by the offering. The Mission
Bancl presented a missionary play.
after which Miss Grace Patterson of
India delighted the audience with
her address on "India." Reports ell
committees wets, _head and an in-
vitation from Moncrieff Siciety to
hold the next convention there was
accepted. The session- closed with
prayer. offered by Mrs. Dow of
Brueefield.

PORTER'S HILL
Grace United church held its anni-
versary services on Sunday,. with
morning and evening services. The
Rev. E. A. Poulter of Varna was the
special preacher, delivering inspiring
and instructive sermons, and *the
attendance was -good at each ser-
vice. The Lobb quartette assisted in
the service of song in the morning
and the mixed quartette from Wes-
ley -Willis church, Clinton, consisting
of Mrs. Hearn and Mrs. Paterson
and Messrs. C. Cooper and M. Mc -
Ewan in the evening.
On Monday evening the fowl sup-
per and entertainment was given, be-
ing fairly well attended, although a
similar affair at Benniller no doubt
drew some that way. The supper, to
which about three hundred sat down,
was all that could be desired and was
well -served. The program after-
wards consisted of a play given by
the Westfield players, and music by
the Westfield orchestra, was much
enjoyed. The play. which was hum-
orous, caused much merriment anti
laughter, good exercise after a hear-
ty meal. The proceeds of the anni-
versary and supper amounted to a-
bout $180.
At the regular meeting of the
Men's Club on Tuesday evening Mr.
