Charge is Dismissed
Of Having Weapon
Magistrate L W. Morley, in a
judgment given in police court,
at Goderich on 'Thursday last, dis•
missed a charge against Thomas J.
Riley, Clinton, of being in possession
of a weapon dangerous to the public
peace.
In declaring the accused not guilty
of the charge the court advised him
to dispose of the weapon, which, it
was alleged, he had used to frighten
doge away from his flower beds.
In the evidence given previously
Harold, McLean testified that on
June 11, he heard a 'shot as he was
passing the Riley home and a dog
ran out which was bleeding badly.
He testified he did not see the ac-
cused,
Harry Davies and Frank Dixon
stated they ,had seen the accused
shooting at dogs with what sounded
like a .22 calibre rifle, .
. Provincial ,Oonstabe W. Gardner
said he had investigated the shooting
with firearms after receiving com-
plaints and seized a rifle in which
there were two shells.
Dr, G. S. Elliott, veterinary sur-
geon, said he had been called in by
Mr. Davies to attend a cocker span-
iel which died from a bullet wound.
Denies Dog Shooting
The accused, on the stand, denied
shooting the dog, adding he had used
clay shells in .the rifle to get rid of
starlings and to ,some extent on dogs
that were molesting his flower gar-
den.
Frank Donnelly, IC:C., counsel for
;Riley, s0bmitted that .there was no
by-law in Clinton to prohibit the
use of firearms and that ,the rifle
waw kept to prevent dogs from eve-
ning over flower beds. He also
quoted regnaletion in law by which
tags must be purchased for dogs,
and that a dog with no bag and
without control, can be killed'.
Crown Attorney. 11 E. Holmes
argued there was no authority. to
allow anyone to ehoot. If firearms
are handled in an inhabited neigh-
borhood, it is clangorous to children
and that careless and indiscriminate
use of a weapon is a dangerous
procedure. •

court at Goderich. Thmrsday last when

Seaforth to Have
Provincial 'Police
'Seaforth Town Council decided
that an agreement will be entered in-
to immediately with the Ontario
Provincial Police, whereby the pro-
vincials will take over the responsib-
Thite( for policing ,Seaforth. In the
prolice matter eaoh member was pall-
ed by iMayor M. A. Reid as to ;his
opinion and all favored the change
and felt it would provide a definite
improvement and more satisfactory
service,
Making its recommendation, the
committee pointed out the cost would
approximate 24;200 a year. This
would *inolude the service of two
lull -time constables, and transportat-
ion. Present police costs are approx-
imately '$1,500 a year.
