THE THRIVING VILLAGE Op' Hbi,NSA,LL this year is cele-
brating the 50th anniversary of its dnauguration, as an incorporated
village. The 1946 Reeve and Warden of Huron County, Richard F).
Shaddick, is retiring from office after nine years' service in the
Council. His successor as Reeve in 1947, is Alvin W. Kerslake,
elected to this office by acclamation.
The village was inrorporaited.in .1896.. The first Reeve was
G. C. Petty and members of the Council mere: William Bell, William
Moir, William Hodgins and Henry Gook, with H. J. D. Cooke as

the late IVIr. Pettyi and Owen Geiger.
The village grew rapidly at first, and at one time had a
population of 900; at present it is 650.
"There are more houses in the village than we ever had," the
genial clerk, J. A. Paterson, said.' Formerly large families occupied
many of them, but now 35 per cent of the houses are occupied by
one person, and 30 per cent by two people, many of whom are
retired farmers.'
Industrially, Hensan has kept pace well with the times, and the
village now has one of. the greatest grain and bean markets in
Western Ontario.
There are three churches in the village; and one school which
has been succeeding generations of children in •attendance for more
than 60 years. Clerk Paterson said that his ancestors were there
long before there was a village.
