Clinton News-Record, 1946-08-29, Page 8RICHWEARS DROP DECIDING GAME TO WINGHAM 6-3 Wingham Hurons took the rubber 'game in their WOAA softball group finalseries, with Clinton Richwears by defeating the locals at Wingham Monday evening by 6-3 before a record crowd. Bert White, regular thirdsacker for .Richwears, was on the sick list. Hurons, now advance against Walk- erton in the next round for the title. .As it was the third game of the seriers, the , teams tossed for choice of 'field' or bat. ' Clinton won and took the field. Going into the last of the ninth three runs down, Rich - wears threw an awful scare into the homesters. .With one out, Livermore was safe on Niergarth's error. Miller Walked. Glew flied to centre for the second. out. Then Hawkins banged one into deep right centre. which Foster caught sensationally. If he had missed the drive, the game might have ended differently. Gordon Rosshomer in the 8th, searing Hawkins ahead of him, featured. ' Clinton Players and fans can now wish HensaIrthe best of luck in their quest for the- Ontario title; it looks as if they may come up against Clinton R. and C. S. in the first round of the playdowns. There was only one sour note in the final game and that didn't con- cern the two teams but the umpires -- Carmichael and Foster, Windham,. The game was scheduled to start at 6 pm. SHARP; it did not get under way until 643 p.m. Reason was that the two imps did not arrive on the field until about 6.25 p.m., al- though both teams hadbeen ready to play for well over half an hour and the crowd was becoming impatient. Here is what "Constitution and By- laws 1946," Ontario Baseball Asso- ciation, says: "National League Rules to govern all games; and all twilight genies in the' play-off series must commence, viz., Every championship game must be commenced not later than two hours before sunset, etc., etc." According to the Canadian Al- manac for 1946, the sun set officially at '7.04 pan. (EST) 'or 8.04 pm. (EDST). In other words, the game sheuld have got under way prior to 6.04 pm. instead of 28 minutes later. And that 29 minutes might have meant a lot of difference to the Colts! As it was, the game had to be called because of darkness at the end of 61h innings, all because the gents from Wingham did not leave home soon- er—or something. As far as the game itself was con- cerned, Fred (MacDonald and Joynt hooped up in a nice pitchers' battle which was decided by three good but rather lucky hits for Hensall. One of these landed along the right outfield line and two others smashed into left field just inside third base. The Colts aided the good work by some loose infield play and basesrunning, includ- ing two men being caught off first base after hitting safely, with none out in each instance. SI. righthand- er did in a •sudden -death WOAA in- termediate baseball group semi-final match in Clinton .0ommunity Park diamond Saturday evening. His team defeated Go:led& Fliers 5-4 and qual- ified to meet St. Marys for the group .With the score tied 4-4 and two out in the first of the ninth, Wilson sing- led cleanly to right on the ground between first and second. Bill Tiller then popped a high spinner deep be- tween first and second bases, which Faulkner, Goderich second -sacker dropped. Wilson raced for home with the run which proved the winning one. Walsh fanned to end the rally, but Wilson's hit—the first safe one off Bob Carrick since the fifth inning, was enough to wn the long five -game series with Goderich. In the last half of the ninth, it was nip -and -tuck and had the large crowd of fans on their toes. Mero, the first up for Goderieh beat out an infield single to Gord Evans at short on a close decision at first. Clemens doubled to deep right on the ground past first. Moro raced for home but was mpped at the plate by Houle on a perfect relay from Laurin to Muir to Houle for the first out. Clemens pulling up at third. Wilson pitched superbly in this pinch and made W. Westbrooke pop weakly to him and fanned H. Westbrooke swinging to end the game and the series. It was a tough game for that vet- eran southpaw, Bob Carrick, to lose. 2 1 BOX SCORE R. and C. S.
