The many friends, of Mrs. James
Eowey, Exeter, will be sorry to hear
that she underwent a serious operation
in Victoria Hospital. We wish her a
speedy recovery.

Mrs,. Donald Harris entertained at
her home at Porter's Hill, at 'a mis-
cellaneous shower, honoring her
sister-in-law, Miss Betty Harris,
whose marriage to Ross Feagan takes
piece on August 10. The guest of
Mr. it d airs. Fred Smith and
daughter Norah, Noland -1. Quebec,

Birthday Party ,
A very pleasant evening was spent
at the home of Mr. and Airs. T. B.
Baird last Thursday evening when
Mrs. Baird entertained in honor of
her sister, Mrs. Caskey, Manitoba,
who with her husband, is visiting
friends and relatives hers The oc-
casion was Mrs. Caskey's birthday and
all the brothers and sisters with their
families were able to be there. After
an enjoyable evening of .games, lunch
was served by the hostess. The table
was centred with a beautiful birthday
cake decorated with candles. Besides
the sisters, Mrs. Caskey and Mrs.
Baird, also present, were: Mrs. Cask-
ey's six brothers, Hugh Ailcenhead,
Brumfield; Frank, Hensall; Duncan,
Seaforth; Dv. Albert, Calgary; Mac,
London; and Dr. Will, 'Toronto.
Miss Joan Hann, Toronto, has re-
turned home after visiting Miss
Blanche Zapfe.
Ladies' Club Meets
A large number of members, visit-
ors and children attended the meet-
ing of the Stanley Ladies' Club, held
at the home of Mrs. Goldie Graham,
.August I. The meeting opened with,
the Lord's Prayer This was followed
by the secretary's and treasurer's re-
ports. The collection was taken and
amounted to 310.20. Seventeen mem-
bers answered the roll call by telling
"The farthest you've been from
home." The visitors also were asked
to answer. There were 17 visitors and
13 children present.
It was decided to pack another box
for a needy family in Holland. A
letter from Holland was read thanking
the ladies for a previous box sent to
a family there. A programme fol-
lowed consisting of a piano solo by
Thelma Baird, also one by Audrey
Baird. A solo by Mrs. John Innes,
Clinton, two contests by Mrs. Norman
Baird. A duet by Lillian and Betty
Stewart. The meeting closed with the
singing of God Save the King. A very
substantial lunch was then served by
Mrs. Graham and her group. If pres-
ent plans are carried out the next
meeting will be held at Mrs. John A.
McZwan's home. The roll call to be
answered by telling "The name you
would wish to be called and the one
you dislike most."

Mrs, John Harris entertained at a
trousseau tea in honor of her daugh-
ter Betty. The gnests, numbering IN,
were received by the bride -elect and
her Mother, , In the afternoon the
trousseau w'as• displayed by Mrs. Don-
ald Harris, Porter's Hill, and Mrs.
Clarence McDonald, Goderich. Mrs.
George Feagan, Benmiller, poured tea
at a lace covered table centred with
the wedding cake and flanked by
*bite candles in silver holders. The
assistants were the Misses Marie and
Eileen Gliddon and Phyllis McClincheY.
In the evening the upstairs assistants
were Mrs. Irvine Eedy, Dungannon,
Mrs, Donald Harris and the lllisses
Phyllis and Audrey Harris. Miss M
Beacom and Mrs. Noble Young, Gocl-
erich, aunts of the bride, poured tea,1
and Mrs. Donald Barringer Goshen,
Ind., Mrs. Austin Harris, and the
Misses Lorna and Joy Feagan, sisters
, of Ross Feagan, served.

Fractures Leg
1VIrs. Carrie Ballantyne, prominent
Hensall resident, while vacationing at
Tobermory and Manitoulin Island, had
the misfortune to suffer a fall while
coining down some steps. X-rays re-
vealed a fractured leg. She was tak-
en to St. Joseph's Hispital, London,
Tuesday.

Died in Georgetown
Word was received here of the
death of a former businessman, J. A.
Strang, who died suddenly in George-
town. Mr. Strang previously owned
and operated the bake shop now op-
erated by Mrs. Erva Wasrnan, While
here he built and occupied the resi-
dence where Gordon Elliott now lives.
He is survived by his wife and one
son Max.
