Portion of Retail Store Showing Gun Rack
An interesting corner of the retail store shows containing various sporting oddities in connection
various items of merchandise on display, including with which there will be a guessing contest en
guns in the rack at rear. At the left is a case Saturday.
Promotion
At a Texas Army camp, a long-
eared, sad -eyed mule named Brad had
done his work well and faithfully.
Just before the outfit shipped for
overseas, a long list of promotions
for the enlisted personnel was placed
on the bulletin board.
Beneath it, the men tacked on a
resolution:
"Whereas the mule, Brad, has per-
formed acts beyond the call of duty,
and whereas he has gained the respect
and admiration of this company, be
it resolved that, henceforward, he
shall be addressed by the more digni-
fied name of Bradford, and that he
is hereby promoted to the rank of
horse."
Sand and Gravel
We supplied all the sand and gravel used in the construction
of Ellwood Epps' new building.
It is a fine piece of work, and Ellwood Epps and all those
connected with it should be congratulated!

Alas!
We take some things for granted
And never stop to think
We'd feel as lost without 'em
As printer without ink.
And in my coy opinion;
It would be sad, alas,
To have ten lovely bonnets
And not one looking glass!

CANADIANS SMARTER THAN
YANKS
(The Printed Word)
Reading of United States publica-
tions does not suggest that that
country is of a mind to permit other
countries to ship it goods. The talk
about freer international trade seems
to mean that other countries are to
admit U. S. goods, but that, in the
main, other countries' goods, espec-
ially manufactures, are not to be al-
lowed into the U. S.
A. general lowering of tariffs per-
centagewise is not the answer, either.
If, for instance, the U. 5, tariff on a
commodity is 60 per cent. and ours is
30 per cent., a cut in the middle still
leaves the U.S. inaccessible to our
goods, while the 15 per cent. left for
protection of Canadian products likely
would be insufficient.
Another factor in U.S. protection of
their own market is the red tape. It
often is a greater bar to freer trade
than the customs duty itself.
All in all, the prospect for Can-
ada's getting , a real chance at the
U.S. market is far from good. If
Canada did get such a chance, many
would guess this country would do
well. Our manufacturers and other
products are smarter than their con-
freres in the U.S. They've had to be
to survive in this country of difficult
production and almost insuperable
distribution problems.

PATIENCE WINS
A gentle old Quaker, driving along
a road, encountered a young man
driving from the opposite direction,
There was not room enough for them
to pass each other, unless one of them
would back up his ear.
"I think," called out the Quaker in
a fatherly tone, "thou should make
way for me, for I am older than thou
art."
Pll not budge an inch," the young
man angrily replied. Then ne pulled
out a newspaper and began to read as
he sat still in his oar.
The Quaker leaned back comfort-
ably in his seat and let his eyeo
wander contentedly over thepeaceful
rural scene. "Friend," he called out
at length, "when thou hast read that
paper I should be glad if thou wouldat
lend it me."
The young man gave up the contest.

Temporary Apartments
"You don't mean to say Yon are
not raising any chickens or little
pigs this year?" demanded the post-
master.
"Can't do it," replied the suburban
farmer, "1 leased all my farm build-
ings to city people."
