Clinton News-Record, 1946-05-30, Page 8PAGE EIGHT CLINTON NEWS -RECORD ' THURSDAY, MAY 30, 194e Clinton Colts Open Season With Win Over Exeter 17-9 Clinton Colts started he season 'fiuspictously at home in Community Park last evening when they 'wallop- ed Exeter 17-9 in the opening game of the Huron -Perth Baseball League intermediate series. A large crowd—the stands were full and many stood—witnessed the match .which proved a .good, average exhibition for an opening. !EXETER A83 R BOX SCORE Both teams played very cautiously ` and deliberately which accounted for an average of 19 minutes an inning. The boys .on;'both teams must have some pretty sore' arms today as it was the first game for .some of the war. veterans for several years. Coach Andy Steep's proteges went into an early and rather convincing lead under the, steady and, at times, brilliant pitching of Bob Draper, who stayed in for five innings,. and left with the count 13-2 in favour 'of the homesters. He fanned no less than 11 of his 15 outs, which is quite a feat in any man's league, hot stove or otherwise. He allowed only four safe hits, "Blondy" Cook, who took up the mound chore in the sixth, got into trouble early and often, with the result that the visitors smacked out nine hits for seven runs in three frames. Exeter used three twirlers—Sweet, Elson and Fahner—none of whom showed much of anything. Batting feature was Doug Bartliff's trio of bingles—a homer, a double, and a single—in five times up. Fahner. of Exeter also cracked out a triple and two singles in five trips to the plate.
