Blyth Legion Rejects
Wet Canteen at Hall
Members of Blyth Canadian
Legion Branch. No. 420 voted
clown a proposal to establish a
canteen at the Legion quarters
to be opened two nights a week.
Feature of the meeting was
election of officers for 1950, the
following being named to office:
George McNall, past president;
Bruce Smith, president; Leonard
Rooney, first vice-president; Bor-
den Scott, second vice-president;
Harold Phillips, treasurer; Albert
Maddocks secretary; J. Taylor,
Sergeant -at -arms; and Rev. G.
Murray Wyatt, chaplain. The new
officers will be installed by mem-
bers of the Clinton branch at the
regular meeting.
Five new members were re-
ceived into the branch and two
applications received for trans-
fers.

day afternoon last, Hon. Georg
H. Doucett, Ontario Minister
Highways, cut a ribbon to sym
bolize the formal opening of th
new 200 -foot $269,000 concrete
and steel bridge on King's High
way 21 over the Hayfield Rive
at Bayfield.
The new bridge which join
Stanley and Goderich Townships
had been carrying traffic for only
a few weeks, after taking tw
years to construct. Its comple
tion was delayed by a shorts
of steel.
The Minister opened the bridg
after driving the ten miles Iron
Clinton where he had declared
open the new asphalt paveme
on King's Highways 4 and 8
connecting liths.
Banquet Held
Following the official opening
of the new bridge, the members
of the Councils of Goderich and
Stanley Townships and the Vil-
lage Trustees of Bayfield, tend-
ered a banquet to the officials
present.
Hon. George H. Doucett was
unable to be present, as he was
£Srced to leave for Simcoe prior
to the dinner, but about s45 were
present, including Thomas Pryde,
MLA for Huron; John W. Hanna,
MLA for Huron -Bruce; Warden
John W. Armstrong, Hullett;
Mayor R. Y. Hattin and Reeve
G. W. Nott, Clinton; several ex -
Wardens of Huron County; engin-
eers from District Iflg (ways head-
quarters at Stratford.
The group enjoyed a turkey
dinner at the New Ritz Hotel,
Hayfield. Elmer Webster, reeve of
Stanley Township, was master of
ceremonies and introduced the
speakers.
Built 1907-08
Just by way of interest, The
NEWS -RECORD correspondent
was able to gather some pertin-
ent information concerning the
old bridge and those which pre-
ceded it.
The plaque on the bridge just
closed bears the name of the
construction firm — A, Hill and
Co., Mitchell, 1907. J. T. Currie
was Warden of Huron County,
and the Road and Bridge Com-
mittee cons�jisted of P. Lamont,
chairman; W: Fraser, J. Govep-
lock, R. Elliott, H, alert, and
County Engineer M. Patterson.
During the construction of the
old bridge, one man slipped and
t) (fell, but was held by the feet
- until help oame. It was Com -

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cole open-
ed their home on Thursday even-
ing recently to a large number
of members and adherents of St.
James Church, Middleton, who
gatheredto honour Mr. and Mrs.
Grant Stirling, newly-weds.
The first part of the evening
was spent at euchre; ladies' high,
Miss June John Middleton, 1SrnMreand Mrs.
Stirling were called forward and
an address was read by Mr. Fred
Middleton. church warden, ask-
ing them to accept a fine walnut
living -room table. The groom
thanked his friends for their
kindness, Mrs. Stirling, the for-
mer Anna Cole, was a confirmed
member of St. James Church,

bountiful lunch and social that
afternoon next, December 15, at
