Radio "Hams" Form
Emergency Group
"Hundreds of amateur radio
stations throughout Canada have
been organized quietly and care-
fully into a strong emergency
.communication system by the
RCAF,
The chain is now ready to
start sending "practice" messages,
and will accept any message
from anybody providing it is not
of a business nature, far trans-
mission to any part of Canada.
To exhibit the system to the
public, the RCAF stationed a
transmitter -receiver truck in Vic-
toria Park, London, for three
days• The truck's 300 -watt
transmitter went "on the air"
carrying messages to members
•elsewhere and receiving messages
for London.
The network would go into op-
eration ,in earnest only in . an
emergency of a_kind that might
cause regular communication
channels' to break down.
40 in District
Members of the Air Force
Amateur Radio System, of which
there are about 40 in Western
Ontario, in centres including
Windsor, Chatham, Ingersoll,
Woodstock, Owen Sound, Wing -
ham, Goderich, Clinton, Galt,
Kitchener, es well as London, are
on the air four nights a week on
official business.
They sign on et a pre -stated
time, and under charge of Squa-
dron Controller Frank P. Kehoe,
London, formerly of Clinton, re-
ceive and send messages to and
from the Western Ontario dist-
rict, Contact with other areas
Is maintained by Mr. Kehoe
through another frequency.
Three Frequencies
The organization has three
-frequencies in uae: One for the
areas for transmission between
'members; a second for communi-
cation from one area to another;
.and the third, called the Trans
Canada trunk, for messages of a
transcontinental nature,
The over-all director is Wing
'Commander E. A. D. Hutton,
Ottawa. The dominion is divid-
ed into six areas. London and
Western Ontario are In area No.
4, which extends from Kingston
. `to Windsor. Area Four is fur-
ther subdivided into four squa-
*elrons: Toronto East, extending
from Kingston to Toronto: To-
ronto West, from near Hamilton
to Toronto; Hamilton squadron,
comprising the area around Ham-
ilton; and the London Squadron,
centred in London and' extend-
ing from Owen Sound to Wind-
sor, and from Lake Erie to near
Hamilton. •
Area No. 4 has about 125 hams
t e It London squadron about 40.
• Use in Emergency
The RCAF spokesman said the
system had been organized to be
available in cases of emergency
or national disaster.
It had been decided to bring
the transmitter truck from Tien -
ton to London to stimulate in-
terest among the hams and gen-
eral 'public in the scheme. The
truck will he stationed near the
Boer War Memorial in Victoria
Paris until Wednesday evening,
under Flight, Sergeant Wilkes. Its
call letters are VE3rilt. It will
be open for inspection, will be
sending messages and receiving
them from district "hams". and
tomorrow night will go on the
Trans -Canada Trunk at 9 o'clock.
The erea and intra -area fre-
quencies are on the regular ama-
teur wavelengths, but the Trans-
Canada Trunk is on 42.90 kilo-
cycles, specially assigned by the
Dominion Government.
Mr. Kehoe, commander of the
London Squadron, broadcasts from
e station whose call letters are
VE3VU. He is a former officer
from Clinton RCAF Station,
Each "meeting night" Mr. Kehoe
holds "roll call" to see how many
of his "hams" are on the air.
Not all have to be on the air
each night, but mostly they all
are signed on. It is permissible,
though, for them to take turns,
with each "ham" required to be
on duty only one night a week.
The stations in emergency
might receive direct radio cells
from provincial police, RCMP, or
the Air Force, for transmission.
Three Transmitters
Air Force official in charge of
London Squadron is Wing Com-
mander F. J. Gauthier, chief sig-
nals officer et Trenton.
The transmitter truck which
was on display in London had
three transmitters and receivers,
powered by a gas -driven gener-
ator. It can transmit on very
high frequencies or on ordinary

Flying Officer W. F. Potts, who
was in charge of the display,
said the organization needed
practice in sending messages,
which is why it is prepared to
accept messages from the general
public for transmission. He em-
phasized it did not absolutely
guarantee delivery, and that mes-
sages that might have a com-
mercial implication could not be
accepted.

Executive Committee of the On-
tario Federation of Agriculture
appeared before the Ontario
Premier and members of his Cab-
inet, to present a brief protest-
ing the imitation of butter by
the manufacturers of margarine,
oleo -margarine and other sub-
stitutes.
The Canadian Federation hes
urged the Dominion Government
to appeal the decision of the
supreme court respecting mar-
garine, because of the serious
lack of agreement among the
judges in rendering the decision
and also because of the uncer-
tainty the decision has created
in respect to agricultural legis-
lation in the Federal field, and
the future of federal jurisdiction
in handling of agricultural
policies.

FINES INSUFFICXENT
GODERICH—Inspector of Legal
Officers, Toronto, has Informed
Goderich Town Council that fines
collected by Goderich provincial
police were not sufficient to con-
duct the magistrate's court in
accordance with the Magistrates'
Amendment Act. The court hes
been supported this year by pro-
vincial fines. Council previously
had requested a share of the fines
on the grounds that Goderich
pays for protection under the
provincial police system and
should receive some of the rev-
enue accruing to the court.
