1948 was $121,093,807, a gain of•
$4,021,235 over '1947. Insurance
in force reached an all-time high
+of $893,544,406, the $105,395,136
gain •being more than $17 mil-
lions greater than any previous
.gein. Assets and policy reserves
increased to $231,354,550 and
$188,044,984 • respectively. Pay-
ments to policyowners and bene-
ficiaries were $615,000 greater
'than in any previous year,
Mr. Macdonald reported that
interest earned on invested as-
sets decreased from 3.68 per cent
in 1947 to 3.61 per cent in 1948.
This was attributed to the matur-
ing and refunding of many older
investments purchased originally
at excellent rates, and the fact
that during the war years all
funds available were placed in
war loans at three per cent or
leas. On the other 'hand, mort-
gage investments were placed at
:an average' rate of interest of
Blackwell Urge.'

The January meeting of the
Porter's Hill. Community Club
