ENCOURAGEMENT
OF JUNIOR WORK
Thedwindling fertility of
Ontario's soil Is the biggest
worry on ;,the doorstep of beef
cattle porducers, said Prof. R.
G. Knox, speaking at Clinton, at
the annual meeting of the Perth -
Huron, Shorthorn Club.
Beef animals are not getting
the food from en acre of pasture
that they were getting from the
same land at the end of the
nineteenth century, said the
speaker, who is heaof the ani-
mal husbandry department at
Onttario Agricultural College,
J. C. Rennie, Clinton, assistant
agricultural representative for
Huron, urged Shorthorn Club
members to encourage junior farm
work by making calves available
to boys' calf club members, at
prices the boys can afford. Three
junior clubs in Huron, of which
one was a mixed dairy -beef
club, had a total of 30 beef
calves, of which 20 were Short-
horns, Mr. Rennie reported.
Roy Nethercott, St. Marys, was
elected president of the Club for
1949, succeeding W. A. Culbert,
Dungannon, Dr. M. W. Staple-
ton, Dublin, was elected 1st vice-
president; Arnold Robinson, St.
Marys, was named 2nd vice-
president. The secretaryship,
which also alternates between
Perth and Huron, goes for 1949
to Ralph White;Stratford, agri-
cultural representative for Perth.
Huron directors for 1949 are:
Howard Armstrong, Seaforth;
James Scott, Seaforth; Roy
Strong, Gerrie; .Andrew Gaunt,
Lucknow; R. M. Peck, Kippen;
Wilbur Turnbull, Brussels,
GIRLS' SPORTS -
Much to our pleasure, new
backboards, badly needed, have
been put up in. the gym at last.
These backboards are different
from the former ones in that the
baskets have leather netting which
will last longer than the original
cord netting,
No doubt these new baskets
will increase our .scoring - at
least we certainly hope so.
