Threshing 'operations are in
full swing with farmers reporting
bumper troops of mixed grains
and fall wheat. Mr. Alex Glatzen,
Grey township, reported an aver-
age load of sheaves contained a-
bout 110 bushels of mixed grain.
Tear Up Corduroy
The road bed of logs or con9u-
roy of the main highway north
of Walton is being torn out and
resurfaced with asphaltic; The
road is also being widened by 17
feet.

Named Special Constable
George Little has recently been
appointed Special Constable for
the County of Huron by Judge
Costello. His territory includes
Bayfield, the Blue Water High-
way north to McAllisters corners,
south to Drysdale and west to
Lake Huron.
Happy Family Reunion
A happy family .reunion was
held at "Lochame", the summer
home of Mr. and Mrs. Cree Cook
when seven members of the lat-
ter's family from Flint, Detroit,
Dearborn and San Francisco were
together for the weekend.
Stratford People Picnic
Employees of Stratford Uphol-
stery Co. held a picnic at Bayfield
Sunday afternoon with about 40
to 50 persons present. The picnic-
kers motored to the Lake Huron
retort and a company truck also
went along to take. supplies. A
boat ride on a Bayfield tug was
a feature of the afternoon's enter-
tainment. Softball games and
horseshoe tournaments were en-
tered into heartily by those pre-
sent.
Successful Picnic
The annual picnic of the Do-
minion Roads Machinery Comp-
any, provided by the president
and general manager, Air Vice-
Marshal J. A. Sully, and the
company, was enjoyed by the 175
employees and their guests num-
bering as many, at Jowett's
Grove, Bayfield, on Saturday.
Every arrangement had been
made to promote the fine spirit
of friendliness characteristic in
the plant.

Mrs. James Barnes spent the
past week at "Alsaja," their sum-
mer home at Lane O'Phies Beach.
Her daughter, Mrs. 3. Franks and
Mr. Franks, Buffalo, NY., were
her guests, accompanied by two
small grandsons, Johnny and
Jimmy Franks.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Wise and
son, John, returned Saturday from
a pleasant ten days' trip through
the Upper Michigan Peninsula.
They went via Port Huron, Flint
and the Mackinac straits, visited
both the American and Canadian
Soo, and returned via Espanola
and the Bruce Peninsula. They
visited a number of relatives and
friends while away.

Feted on Birthday
Mrs. Charles Scott was surpris-
ed by many friends who gathered
at her home in honor of her
birthday. Games were played and
a social time was enjoyed. Lunch
was served, and, a birthday cake
centred the table. Gordon McClin-
chey expressed the hest wishes
of the assembled group.

Auburn Women's Institute met
in the Foresters hall Tuesday
afternoon, August 17, with 32
present',. Mrs.' Herb Mogr'idge
presided and Mrs. R. J. Phillips
presided at the piano. A letter
was read from the Canadian Na-
tional Institute for the Blind re-
garding a tag day here for that
cause; and one from Miss Anna
Lewis, of the provincial Women's
Institute branch, regarding hold-
ing a short course in sewing here.
Mrs. Bert Craig, Mrs, Albert
Campbell, and Mrs, William An-
derson were appointed to arrange
for a tag day; and a committee,
composed of Mrs. Mogridge, Miss
Margaret King, and Mrs. W. A.
Campbell, was named to make all
the necessary arrangements for
the short course,
It was decided to buy a new
flag for the flag pole, Mrs. Edgar
Lawson and'Miss Ethel Washing-
ton to be responsible for the pur-
chase. Trio numbers were contri-
buted by Donna Gow, Betty Rod-

Community Club Meets
The monthly meeting of Por-
ter's Hill Community Club was
held on Wednesday afternoon,
August 18, at the home of Mrs.
A. Lockhart. The president, Mrs.
J. A. Torrance presided with 17
ladies present. The meeting op..
ened with singing "Comin' Thro-
ugh the Rye", followed by The
Lord's Prayer. The secretary's
land treasurer's reports were read
and adopted. Following a lengthy
business discussion Mary Torrance
conducted a contest the winner
being Mrs. Bert Harris. At the
close of the meeting the hostess
served a delicious lunch.
SUMMERHILL-
Ladies' Club Meets
The August meeting of Sum-
merhill .Ladies' CIub was held on
Wednesday, August 11, at the
home of Mesdames William and
Charles Merrill. The meeting
opened by singing "Abide With
Me," followed by the Lord's
Prayer repeated in unison. Min-
utes of the previous meeting were
read and approved'and the treas-
urer's report given, The roll call
was answered by 16 members
and three visitors.
A quilt was tied during the
afternoon, Notes of appreciation
were read from the Sniith family
and Mrs. Oliver Jervis. Mrs. EL
lis had charge of a contest. A
picnic was planned which was
held at Lions Park, Seaforth, on
Friday, August 20.
The next meeting will be held
at the home of Mrs. Graydon Neal.
Those in charge of the program
are Mrs. Allen Neal, Mrs. Knob -
leech and Mrs. R. Good. The lunch
committee is Mrs. Goldwin Smith,
Mrs. Ellis, Mrs, William Jenkins
and Mrs. Lloyd Stewart.

reading; and the topic, "Don't Be

which a quilt was quilted. The

cock, opened the meeting with

Carman Niekle, concession 15,
Howick Township, died Tuesday
Aug. 15,. as a' result of injuries
received . early Saturday morning
when his car crashed into a tree
as he was returning to his home
from a dance.
A veteran of World' War I1, he
was a prisoner in Germany for
some time. He was unmarried
