Lucknow sudden -death match

for the championship, likely a
sudden death game on the arti-
ficial ice at Owen Sound,

as favoring, municipal garbage
collection as in other towns.
R: N. Irwin commented that
people at Camp were looking for
places in town to live. There
were 113 families living out of
camp.
A. J. McMurray denied that it
was installation of water services
that was holding up occupancy of
the new wartime houses. He said
the sewerage was not installed in
ten or eleven of them, and they
had to cross over the watermains.
It would be impossbile to have
any one house ready by April 15.
They were notpainted yet, and
it would not be possible for the
contractor to hand over before
April 15 or May 1. The water
Services will be ready by the
time the houses are ready, he
averred.
200 Houses at Camp
President Foster gave an un-.
official report that 4,000 houses
would be erected by the Depart-
ment ofNational Defence through-
out Canada, of which 200 would
be built at RCAF Station, Clin-
ton, and 200 at RCAF Station,
Centralia, the latter at the rate
of 50 a year for four years.
Frank Fingland, KC. declared
that the housing situation in
Clinton was "desperate," judging
by the information reaching him
in his office. He said it was not
likely that houses would he built
on a speculative basis on account
of the high cost of construction,
so that something should be done
by the town as a whole. He
heartily approved that steps be
taken to have 50 additional war-
time houses started this year, and
advised seeing Ottawa at once
with regard to the proposed
housebuilding programme a t
Camp. He suggested getting in
touch,with Messrs Golding and
Cardif, and send a small dele-
gation to Ottawa, if necessary.
C. H. Epps, chairman of the
Industrial Committee, urged that
50 more houses be requested at
once.
N. W. Trewartha moved that re-
port be passed on to Town Coun-
cil, the motion carrying unani-
mously. Harry Bartliff moved that
the Housing Gommniittee get in
touch with the Members of Par-
liament through the Town Coun-
cil. This also was carried unani-
mously.
J. H. Brunsdon, chairman of
Agricultural Committee, recom-
mended holding an enlarged
School or Junior Fair in the fall,
to act as Achievement Day for
various Junior Clubs, and also to
give an opportunity for the
younger generation of the dist-
rict to become interested in agri-
culture. The day would take on
the aspects of a "Farmers' Day."
The assistance of the Ontario Ag-
ricultural Office will,,be secured"
Other matters recommended were
that the Chamber should advertise
for a blacksmith, which is badly
needed in town, that a farm
prpducts industry be established,
and that an Old Boys' Reunion be
held in 1950, just 25 years after
the last one.
Welcome New Families
Leslie .Ball, chairman of' the
Retail Merchants' Committee, re-
commended a scheme whereby
new families moving to Clinton
be' given a letter of welcome and
a gift of merchandise to the ex-
tent of $1 redeemable .by the
merchants. Plans to find suitable.
parking space off the main street
to ease the traffic on Saturday
nights, were discussed. Several
lots were suggested and the own-
ers will be approached.
Mr. Hall asked that retail mer-
chants be ' furnished with maps
of the town and roads leading out
of the town for the use of tour-
ists with - the compliments of,
Clinton Chamber of Commerce.;
The chairman, G.R.. Foster, said
the new. slogan insignia, "The
Hub •of Huron • County," would
solve the 'problem. The Tourist
and Publicity Committee was
avorking • op, this now, and the
slogan and 'chart could. . be used
on merchants' stationery.
The Committee reeommended
that a Clean Up Day be held in
May. This will be considered, '
The Canadian Chamber of Com-
merce forwarded a questionnaire
on the matter of Federal -Provin-
cial tax relations, to be answered
by all Chambers throuahout•Can
ads. The questions will be Voted
on at .thenext meeting' of the
Chamber.
It was decided .to form another
standing committee, one on Na-
tional Affairs;. in view of the
various requests and suggestions
along this line from the Canadian
Chamber of Commerce. , The ex-
ecutive was instructed to set up
this committee.
