Colts Wein Opener,

Colts 5—Hensall 3
Lucan Irish Nine leads the
pack in the Huron -Perth Base-
ball Leagp s youngseason with
two victories and no defeats, but
Clinton Colts are hard by with
one win end one loss
Colts commented the season
most auspiciously against Henson
here on the May 24 holiday with
a 5-3 victory, but Lucan edged a
last -inning 9-7 decision here
Tuesday evening. The latter was.
a case of getting away to a very
bad start in the very first frame.
Clinton 5-Hensall 3
Weather was ideal for the
opening game of the season Thurs-
day morning last, although it was
a little late in getting under way.
The pre -season draw saw Mrs.
Fred Churchill,.Clinton;, win a
radio, and Mrs. Lloyd ' Wolper,
Clinton. a small table. Clarence
Livermore and Jack Butler of-
ficiated at the draw; and C'an
stable James A. Thompson drew
the lucky tickets.
It was a tight match all through,
and an excellent ode for the
league opener. Clinton earned a
one -run lead in the second and
increased it to five in the sixth,
but the visitors broke the spell
by snatching a pair in the eighth
and one in the ninth.
Doug Bartliff worked well on
the mound for Colts, allowing
oily two safe hits in seven in-
nings, with the veteran Gordon
Stock tossing them over in the
last two frames.
Jim Sangster pitched for Hen -
sell for six innings and Will
Ells the last two. There were
five hits of Sangster and two
off Ells.
Bill Mickle, Hensall first -
sacker, was high man with the
bat, with a double and two singles.
Taylor had the other two hits
for his team. For Clinton, Art
Woodcock and Jack Wilson each
had a pair of hits. Ken Colquhoun
had a double. and Harry Mc-
Fnwan and Doug Bartdiff each
singled. •

Lucan 9—Colts 7
Lucan Irish Nine introduced a
couple of London boys as a brand-
new battery here Tuesday even-
ing, and walked off with a 9-7
victory aver Clinton Celia in the
second game of the season.
On the strength of their first -
inning performance, when Lucan
shoved across no less than six
runs, Colts deserved to lose. but
the visitors finished strongly with
two runs in the top of the eighth
to gain the decision.
Bob Draper started on the
mound for Colts but got into
serious trouble right off the bat.
Five men faced him, three of
them walking and two getting
safe hits. Doug Bartliff went in
to relieve him with the bases
full and' none out. He had hard
going; too, before the side was
retired but from then on, it was
a fairly good game of ball.
Colts kept rapping away at A.
Robinson's offerings, and garner-
ed two each in the first, third
and fourth, and three' 'in the sev-
enth. They were stopped in their
tracks=one-two-three, in the last
of the eighth.
The Huron -Perth Baseball Lea-
gue seems to be allowing a lot
of leeway. this year in residence
qualifications-per4raps too much.
The first step towards the league's
downfall will be thisi type of
thing, and President Ivan Hearn
of Luoan, should, step on it at
once, before the loop is ruined.
