presented by Mrs. H. Hohner, Mrs.
Sparks and Mrs. A. Dunn, using
the question and answer method.
The point was made that the
struggle for men's minds goes on
increasingly, not only in the polit-
ical field, but also in the realm of
religion; that Christianity in India
finds itself faced with several well -
entrenched religions and philosoph-
ies; and that while much progress
has been made, the proportion of
Christians in the country is still
small,

DRAIN TROUBLE ON DELEVAN
(By ouj- Bayfield Correspondent)°
The drain, on Delevan Street has not been functioning: prop- eriy'„'of Iate years. In the past year it has caved in, at, various
• The .Stanley Township road superintendent, R. Keys, and the
village trustees, J. M. Stewart (Chairman),
J. Reg. Francis
and, Parker, engaged C. P. Corbett, •P;Eli .' consultingengineer
and land :surveyor''Prorn Lean to survey the street
and take ,
Ievels, about tWo months ago.
People were astonished tq learn -that there was a 20 -foot
drop between Corrie's store and Tuyll Street, -
In flood time the Water from Clan Gregor ;Square, part of
Main Street,',dowir Charles Street from the swamp region, etc.,
goes, down this drain,
To control the situation, Mr, Corbett advised installing .800
feet, 12 inch tile with two catch basins, to run the Water into '
the open ditch on Tuyll Street.
When news of this Tot abroad tongues in the village began
to wag. The idea of spending so much money was preposterous)
The street would not be drained by a closed drain (how did it
get into the old wooden drain, we wonder?). And the local Loyal.
Opposition” said so much that the matter came to a head at
the Trustees- Board meeting on Thursday, May 26.
Stanley Township Council favoured following the engineer's
advice, but the final decision was left to the village trustees.
Stewart and Francis approved of the engineer's suggestion.
Parker opposed it and a lively discussion took place.
The final outcome was that T. M. Stewart and R. Francis
bowed to "the man on the street:" 'It was decided to build two,
or three catch basins and run 1,000 ten -inch field tile between,
them to the open ditch on Tuyll Street,
Stewart and Francis worked on Thursday, trying to find the
cement tile which. were laid about 15 years` ago—the western.
portion of the drain which is still functioning, is thought to
have been laid previous to that time, But the cement is deterior-
ating and beginning at the western portion will be replaced for
1,000 feet up the street.
The problem is not one of drainage on this street alone but,
of water disposal from the drains and surface waters which
meet at the head of Delevan. Tile is said to draw only from,
30 feet oneach, side. The street and adjacent properties could
have been drained into the catch basins as designed by Engineer
Corbett.
With the pressure of a flood, the water`seeps out around the -
tile
hetile, and forces a passage. Tiles get out of line and in spots
where there is quicksand the tiles disappear. Another hazard is
.the network of tree roots ons this portion of the street.
It is to be hoped that the same trouble will not develop
again in from ten to 15 years. Time only will tell whether the
proposed system will operate permanently or be just so much.
