FORMER UNDERGROUND
WORKER TO SPEAR
IN ST. PAUL'S CHURCH HERE
Next Sunday, June 12, Bren de
Vries will preach in St. Paul's
Church, Clinton.
Mr. de Vries is a native of Hol-
land. During the last war he was
in Holland during the German oc-
cupation. At that time he was a
student in an agricultural college.
Faced with the alternative of
working for the Germans or going
to a slave •labor camp he joined
the underground, and had many
thrilling experiences.
' After the war he came to Can-
ada with his wife and family. For
some years he has Been a student
at Huron College, and is now the
student -in -charge of the parishes
of Blyth, Auburn and Belgrave. He
is an outstanding speaker and his
message next Sunday is looked
forward to with a great deal of
interest.
Board Hires Two
New Teachers
For CDCI Staff
At their meeting last night,
members of the Clinton District
Collegiate Institute Board author-
ized the hiring of two more teach-
ers at the school. Ross Middle-
ton, Bayfield, uriiti1 now a teacher
in the public school at Dashwood,
was hired at the sum of $3,800
per year. A Mr. McGillis, Wind-
sor, was hired at $3,200 to teach
English and History.
Both Mr, McGillis, and the Miss
McKee hired earlier this year, are
taking a special ten weeks summer
course to fit them for high school
teaching. McGillis will teach Eng-
lish and History, while Miss Mc-
Kee is expected to take over most
of the Special Commercial Work.
At the same meeting resigna-
tions from Mrs. John E. Robinson
and J, G. Peacock were accepted.
At letter of commendation of the
work done by shop teacher Bill
Craig from the inspector of in-
dustrial arts was read.
The Board decided to buy 31
more lockers, and 100 chairs for
the auditorium, Enrolment for the
past month was 325.

authorized to purchase a green-
house costing over $600, and let
the contract for putting in a
cement wall for it, and cement

iansen, Blyth. -
Business Block
Will Keep Trees
(Continued from Page One)
been planned—that is with the 30
foot width, leaving the poles, side-
walk and trees on the east side of
the street,
Coun, Irwin Well there's this
about it. If we don't go ahead
with 'this widening the street,
we're pinching pennies. If' we do,
then we're cutting trees,
Reeve Crich; We don't know'how
this town will grow. We may
have to make these alterations in
the near future, and they will cost
more. For the sake of two or
three thousand dollars, it seems a
shame not to go ahead: and do
this. One block further south on
the otherside, You took their trees,
yet these folks are to keep theirs.
It would be awfully nice to have
the street as wide in this block as
in the others.
Coun. Shaddick: I --understood
Mr, Patterson to say that the
extra width would involve $7,000
extra cost.
Coun, Irwin: Patterson suggest-
ed at the meeting of our com-
mittee, to leave the sidewalks,
poles and trees alone. Now he's
changed his mind. There's been.
undue interference somewhere
along the line. The committee
had agreed on a procedure with
the engineer -there should have
been no need for further discus-
sion.
Reeve Crich: I'm to blame for
having Patterson here to -night. If
I'd been advised of a cost of
$7,000, the story would possibly
have been different,
Coun, Glidden: If the people
down below us on the east side
had allowed their trees to come
down, it would have been all right
with us: But they didn't.
(Members of the public works
committee are: Deputy Reeve
Stanley; Couns, Shaddick, Beattie
and Irwin.)
A motion was passed authoriz-
ing the laying of sidewalks in ac-
cordance with specifications pre-
scribed by the engineer.

Tour Big Orchards
More than 30 members of the
Huron County Fruit Growers As-
sociation enjoyed the bus tour con-
ducted on Tuesday to the Burling-
ton and Toronto areas. The visit
included the farms of Col. T. Ken-
nedy and his son-in-law, Les
Hughes, near Hamilton, and also a
trip through the Ontario Food
Terminal—a $5,100,000 centre for
wholesale and retail marketing of
foods. At the farm of Ken Dubois,
Carlisle, the group saw a complete
dwarf orchard of apple and pear
trees, as well as standard cherry
trees. Six acres of dwarf apple
