Legion Men Term
Bingo Card Phony
Plan Free Game
• Canadian 'Legion officials at
Exeter have announced that a
bingo card which contained the
winning numbers on a free car
prize offered at a Legion bingo
in Exeter in July, was not an
official card.
,A free bingo will be held in Oc-
tober to determine a new winner.
A man from Cincinnati claimed
the car in July but Legion officials
held up the awarding of it until
bis bingo card could be checked.
The claimant has returned to the
United States and has not protest-
ed the decision.

Francis J. Picot, R.R. 2, Bay-
field, who died in Victoria Hospi-
tal, London, August 21, in his 73rd
year, was born in Goderich Town-
ship, where he spent most of his
life.

the Beattie funeral home, Ratter -
bury Street, Street, Clinton, Tuesday af-
ternoon, August 24; • Rev. Peter
Renner, .Bayfield United Church,
officiated and interment was made
in 13ayfielcl Cemetery.
Surviving besides his wife, the
former Eleanor Weston, are one
son, Lloyd, Goderich; two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Murray Pollock (Verna)
Talmage, Saskatchewan; Mrs.
Merrill- Switzer (Lillian), Gode-
rich' Township; two brothers, Al-
bert, Ripley; Ernest, Milestone,
Sask.; three sisters, Mrs. Don
Capbell,- Los Angeles; Mrs,
Mabel LaBarge, Guelph and Mrs.
LloYd Solider, Prescott.
• Pall -bearers were Allen Betties,
George Johnston, Fraser' Stirling,
Wesley Vanderburg, George Monk,

Mrs- Henry Govier

.In failing health for some thine
Mrs. Henry. Gooier .died at her
home in Auburn, Friday evening,
August 27, in her aath year.
She was the former Alice Jessie
Sheppard, daughter of the late
John and Margaret Sheppard and
was born near Toronto, April 24,
1860. When eight years of age she
came with her parents to Goderich
tovvriship, settling on a farm on
the Mase Line.
In 1881 she married HenrY
Coyle'', Following their marriage
they farmed on • concession one,
East Wawano.sh, for 22 years, then
moved to the Base Line to trie
Gooier homestead until 36 years
ago, when they retired to Auburn.
Mr. Gooier died in 1932.
She was 71 member of Knox
Presbyterian Church and a • life
member of the Women's Mission-
ary Society.
Surviving are 'a son, William,
Blyth; ten grandchildren; and 31
great grandchildren. A son, Her-
bert, d.id two years ago.
The funeral was held from the
J. K. Arthur funeral home on Mon-
day afternoon and interment was
in Ball's cemetery.
Peter Walter, student Tninister
of Knox Presbyterian Church, was
in charge. Pall -bearers were Earl
Caldwell, Mervin, Robert, Carl,
William and Albert Gooier.
Mrs. Wm, Andrew
Mrs. William J. Andrew, life
member of the Women's Mission-
ary Society, died on Tuesday, Au-
gust 31, at Alexandra Hospital,
Goderich, after a short illness. She
was 80 years old.
Daughter of the late JamesG.
Cartwright and Hannah Wigging-
ton, the former Henrietta M. Cart-
wright was boni in Mullett Town-
ship. She taught school at Creb-
more for several years. After her
marriage she lived on a farm near
Creemore and later in the Blyth
and Auburn districts.
When her husband retired 1n1926
she moved to Goderich. She was a
member of North Street United
Church.
She is survived by her husband;
a son, Amos; two daughters,
Freida, and Mrs. .Mex McNiven,
all of Goderich; a sister Mrs.
Bert Gibbings, Clinton; three
grandchildren and two great.
grandchildren.
The body is at the Cranston fun-
eral home, Goderieh, where service
will be conducted on Friday, at 2
p.m, by Rev. A. S. Bickingson.
Burial will be in Maitland Ceme-
tery.

showmanship competition were

South Huron Garden Clubs
Achievement Day
Seven 4-11 Garden Clubs of
South Huron, with 109 members,
recently held a successful Achieve-
ment Day, in , Seaforth Public
School. Miss Jean Steckle, home
economist, was in charge, assisted
by Miss Florence Eadie, of the
WI Branch, Toronto; Mrs. Harold
Anderson, Middlesex and Elgin
Counties and G. W. Montgomery
and. Harold Baker, agricultural
representatives for Huron County.
Provhicial Certificate
Catherine Campbell, of the Sea -
forth Merry Maidens' Club, was
awarded a _provincial honor certifi-
cate and pm, having completed 12
projects. Catherine will also rep-
resent Huron County on the East-
ern Ontario trip.
County certificates and county
honor pins for completing six pro -
eats were awarded to Joy Jantzi,
Seaforth; IVIary Skinner, Elimville;
Shirley Finnigan, Dungannon and
Isabel Deer, Auburn.
Silver teaspoons were awarded
to all club members completing
the project. Certificates of
achievement for completion of _two
projects to 46 girls.
' Cheek 187 Gardens
Gardens of 187 club members in
Huroq County had previously been,
inspected and scored.
Classes of cabbages and carrots
with reasons for the latter were
judged.
•All seven clubs placed club ex-
hibits with comments given by,the
Kippen, Elirnville, Hurondale, Car-
low and Dungannon members, on
"Vegetables From Our Club Gar-
dena."

A joint meeting of the Bayfield
and Howick Swine Clubs was
held at the farm of William
Weeks, R,R 4, Clinton, on August
17. The meeting opened with the
4-11 pledge. The minutes. of the
previous meeting were read by
Bill Longmire. Joanne McCullough
moved their adoption, secended by
Alex Ostrom. A class of York-
shire gilts and martcating hogs
was judged. A quiz was answered
by all, Meeting was adjourned on
motion of Edith Wren.
News of Brucefield
Brucefield Fire Department an-
wered a call to the barn fire at
W. Mayter's last week, near
Varna.

Choir Party
Follpwing the regular choir
practice on Thursday night at the
Brucefield TJnitecl Church, the
choir members remained for •a
brief social hour, in honour of one
of their members. They present-
ed a pretty cup and saucer_to Miss
Shirley Maines, daughter of Rev,
arid Mrs. W. J. Maines as token
of the help she had beers through-
out the past two years. Miss
Manes had been a regular at-
tendant at practice and had helped
with solo work, as well as with

Houses Being Built
Work is continuing an the new
homes .being built in the village
by Harry Dalrymple and by the
Misses Kay and Marie Elliott. Mr.
a.nd Mrs. Dalrymple eXpect to
move into their -home sometime
this month. ,
These two make a total of seven
new houses in the village during
the past three years,
Farewells Said
There was a large attendance
at the United Chureh service on
Sunday morning. The choir sang
an anthem and Mrs. G. Richardson
took the solo part. Rev. W. J.
Maines preached a forceful sermon
with his usual touches of humour.
Mr. and Mrs. Maines and Shirley
leave on Wednesday for their new
home at Embro, On Monday even-
ing a social evening was enjoyed
prior to their departure.
• Et. P. Watson acted as chairman
for a short program after which
Mr. and Mrs. Maines and family
were presented with a cheque
from the congregation. Mrs. R.
Allan read an address from the
VVMS and 1VErs, Alice Ham pre.
sented Mrs. Maines with a beauti-
ful lace tablecloth. Lunch was
served by the ladies. Mr. and
Mtn Wines and family will be
greatly missed in the community.
