Tal STORES DESTROYED Englehart Suffers From Disas- trous Conflagration. BAD FIRE AT NORTH SYDNEY Visited riTown Is by Northern Ontario a Blaze Which Wipes Out Business Section at, a Cost of $125,000 - Nova Scotia Town Has a Simi- lar, Catastrophe- Midland and North ' Bay Report fires. NORTII 'BAY, May 5. -Englehart, divisional .point on the T. '& N. 0. Railway, was visited by a disastrous fire which started early yesterday morning in Halditeh's bakery, wiped out a large business block, several residences and other smaller build- ings. A man named Comstock was severely injured by falling from the roof of the T. & N. 0. Railway station while fighting the fire. Not a building stands to mark the busiest section of the town. It was with diffieulty that the large King Edward Hotel was saved, and al- though it was on fire many times vol- unteer firemen assisted greatly. Had it caught fire during the conflagration what little of the section of the town that was left would to -day also be in ashes. The loss is conservatively estimated at $125,000, -with less than $50,000 in- surance to cover this. In all twenty- two buildings fell a prey to the flames, including some ,thirty stores, and to- day the town is without a single gro- cery store, a butcher shop,. bakery or drug store, and it is necessary to send out to other towns in the district for the daily necessaries of life. The Government railway buildings escaped damaged, but the following places were burned: Jameson Meat Co., store at Wonderland Moving Pic- ture House, J. Clark's genera] store, (Loftus Restaurant, Union Bank, Durr - rack's barber step and pool room, iI uglles stationery stere, pots-tcftc. far. Lowery s drug st6fta end resi- dence, McGladery Bros.' hardware store, Herman's tailor shop, O'Grady's store, Rubenstein's gents' furnishings store, Thonipson's fruit and ice cream parlor. Chinese laundry, Dr. Reid's of- fice, Berman's grocery, City Meat Market, Holdrtch's bakery, Metcalf's jewelry store, Vertlieles grocery, En- 'glehart News printing office, Le. blanc's residence, and other small 'buildings. r The fire is a hard blow to the town. as most of the business section is in ashes. There were no facilities to cope 'with such an extensive conflagration once it had a good start, and the flames speedily icked up the frame 'buildings in its path, and nothing 'could be done except to try to prevent :the spread of the fire, as the 'entire town was threatened with destruction. 'Insurance will not begin to cover the 'losses. The water for fire purposes supplied by the railway gave out about an, hour after the fire started, owing to a :break, and the town's fire engine 'was placed on the station platform, and several T. & N. 0 engines made runs to and from the water tank, and on returning, the town hose would be ' supplied from the tender tanks of the steam engines. In this manner enough water supply, was secured to save what little of the town is left to -day. • North Sydney Devastated. NORTH SYDNEY, N.S., May 5. - The entire business block of North iSydney, bounded at ane end by the marine railway and at the other by 'Archibald avenue, was destroyed by !fire at an early hour yesterday- morn- ing. Every principal business house in the town is gone except the large departmental store of Vooght Bros, land buildings of the Royal and Nova Scotia Banks. The loss is estimated at a quarter of a million dollars. One life was lost, that of Percy Sayer, l3vho man=.pec the f.jolrel theatre. Horses and Rigs ,Burned. RT. HON.
